Quote from: Dry Brett Kavanaugh on February 15, 2025, 07:45:55 PMDo any members think that the music under his conducting tend to sound more Slavic/Eurasian (or less European)?

He reminds me of several black Jazz musicians, ie. some recordings from Blue Note label.

I don't know if I agree exactly, but I love him because he has his own sound. A lot of conductors sound exactly alike to me - not him - he is one of the few that I can normally differentiate, but I like artists who are idiosyncratic, as I prefer interesting and intriguing over accuracy (see my love of Anton Kuerti's Beethoven; although, ironically, my favorite Schubert Piano Sonata are the cleanest and crispest I've ever come across - Eschenbach, so a case-by-case basis). :-)

Wow, what excellent pieces. So much done with just 2 string instruments.

Yes, still a great recording.  :)

Nelson in Shostakovich 14 last night. Too long since I've listened to this, though it isn't a work for easy listening and a favorite in the cycle for me.

Nielsen: Aladdin

As far as I know this is the only recording of the complete music rather than the suite. I figured I might as well give the whole thing a whirl.

EDIT: The music doesn't have much of what I'd normally regard as distinctly Nielsen touches. Which is not to say it's bad music, far from it. It's very colourful and listenable. But I wouldn't necessarily be able to pick that the composer was Nielsen.

SECOND EDIT: And of course, as soon as I write that I reach a number that definitely does sound like Nielsen.

Bach: Cantata BWV197 'Gott ist unsre Zuversicht'

Following in the venerable Bach cantata steps of @Traverso (post #124128) where he says this cantata is one of his absolute favorites, and the aria "Schläfert allen Sorgenkummer" is of a moving beauty that overwhelmed him, moving him to tears  when hearing it for the first time. I whole heartedly agree with his sentiments, it's a miraculous work that seems virtually perfect. He listened to the Leonhardt version, which I may dip into later, but this Suzuki version is a truly wonderful thing too.

In advance of the Czech Philharmonic Shostakovich 5th here in Bruges on March 12, I am revisiting Haitink's Concertgebouw version. One of my favorite symphonies.

The first half of life is spent in longing for the second, the second half in regretting the first.

Epoca Barocca.

A lively and sensitive way of playing, as such I perceive the recording, and the interplay is extraordinarily precise. Its like a energetic conversation, witty twists and turns of playful music. For me Epoca Barocca is the best Baroque ensemble from Germany, and this CD proves that abundantly. SOTA recording. This is great fun indeed!

Bach, Cantata BWV4, Harnoncourt, Suzuki

A lovely work in Harnoncourt's recording, the highlight of which (for me) is the duet for soprano and alto, which I can enjoy despite my discomfort with the sound of a male alto. The effect is similar to the duet in BWV 3.

In BWV 3 I didn't find Suzuki as satisfying as Harnoncourt due to the tempo Suzuki chose for the soprano-alto duet. In this case the duet is very much to my liking, with a tempo similar to Harnoncourt's. The choral singing in Suzuki' recording is superb.

Something completely different, Martinu's Danses Tcheques. Three brief pieces in which the dance emerges from a forest of complex figuration, lovely. Volume 3 of this series seems to collect many of Martinu's more substantial pieces for solo piano.

Formerly Scarpia (Scarps), Baron Scarpia, Ghost of Baron Scarpia, Varner, Ratliff, Parsifal, perhaps others.
