Khachaturian: Piano Sonata and Piano Sonatina

Good to find out that Khachaturian composed some phenomenal music for piano. The sonata is a must-hear for every serious fan of this composer. Mind-blowing stuff.

The current annihilation of a people on this planet (you know which one it is) is the most documented and at the same time the most preposterously denied.

Aha. Thank you! Listening now at your recommendation 🙂

Good Fantastiques are not hard to find, great ones not so. I'm not sure this is a great recording of the work. Not as atmospheric, mysterious (1st movement), gloomy (Scène aux champs), spooky (Marche au supplice), garrulous and over the top (Songe d'une nuit de sabbat) as Karajan's second BP recording maybe. Davis is elegant, serene, attentive to every detail and dynamic marking. The orchestra and recording are superb.

On one hand, ask anyone to name ten Stravinsky works and there's practically no chance they'll mention the Concertino. On t'other, I find a lot to like in Igor Fyodorovich's "Back 40," as it were.

William Walton: Symphony No.1 in B-flat minor. Edward Gardner, BBC Symphony Orchestra

Daniel Jones: Symphony No. 5

Rubinstein: Piano Concerto No. 4

This work marks a pronounced difference with respect to the previous three. Great piece.

After Fleischer's unforgettable Beethoven, this box really lives up to the expectations.

Nice cover art!

Continuing on with the Nielsen symphonies --- now playing Symphony No. 5, FS 97, Op. 50 from this set:

Certainly amongst the greatest 20th Century symphonies and, if I'm not mistaken, this is @Symphonic Addict's favorite symphony.

Thank you kindly for the recommendation. I must confess, for quite some time now, I have found that which is elegant and serene to be at least as appealing, if not more so, than garrulousness and gloom. At any moment, I would gladly trade that which sets the mind ablaze for that which calms it and fills it with hope. :)

First Tier as listed by @coffee -

Bach - Mass in B minor BWV 232 - Van Veldhoven | Netherlands Bach Society.

Fair enough, I found it relaxing and easy to listen to all the way to the end.

Never been an fan of the Symfonie Fantastique by Colin Davis and the Concertgebouworkest (despite being with the Concertgebouworkest).
But Markevitch with the Berliner (DG) will blow your socks off! :)

In a couple of weeks it will be Holy Week in Western Christianity.
Since there is so much music I like dedicated to that season, I'm getting a head start with these Palestrina Lamentations. Palestrina wrote four books, which are sadly underrecorded. This is Book 2.

Tier 136 for @coffee -

Berio: Sequenza XI for guitar

A pleasant enough listen in the background for 16 minutes while focusing on the forum but I see no reason to promote it to any new listener.

In Eastern Christianity as well. This year Easter will be celebrated the same Sunday all over the whole Christianity.

Spring's just starting to make its presence felt, and the mornings are still quite nippy. The sea breeze is nice and fresh, but it certainly doesn't do much for warmth. So, I've taken to keeping my cozy socks on pretty much all the time, really! :)
