Quote from: Rons_talking on March 31, 2025, 03:42:55 PMWow! That's beautiful. The voicings are splendid. The melodies really soar. It makes me want to want to attempt composing a similar piece. I hope there's a performance in the future!
Thanks!

Upon the joint suggestion of Carol and Peter, I've made a start on a new flute duet. I'm one minute in.

Quote from: Karl Henning on March 22, 2025, 05:22:45 PMAnd well, since I just pardoned myself for seeming to procrastinate on the Op. 199, I made some headway tonight on the Op. 197. My first thought was a Fantasia on "A Laugh for Rory" (a number which Kirk wrote and played for his infant son, and a track which my parakeet enjoys) for the Recorders, which I might then adapt for the Henning Ensemble. I immediately perceived that if I kept to that thought, it would be a piece too challenging for the recorders, and of insufficient interest for the, erm, Henningtonians (a barbarous neologism coined by Peter, but which seems to stick around.) I therefore resolved to write two distinct pieces, both based on the same Rahsaan Roland Kirk number, but each tailored to its proper group.
A little more work, and ready to proceed.

Quote from: Karl Henning on March 09, 2025, 08:50:39 AMI may have mentioned that the Lutheran parish with which I've come to affiliate myself is engaged in combining with the parish in Malden. Malden is joining many other communities in having a Porch Fest. My friend Greta plays in a recorder ensemble, and they're considering playing for the Porch Fest, so I'm going to arrange a couple of my pieces to suit: Surfing an Earthquake (for three recorders) and Yesterday's Snow (for three recorders and bassoon.)

A little bit late, but I saw this article in yesterday's Boston Globe. A subscription is needed, so a link wouldn't work, but I snagged a couple of sections that I hope are readable. Porchfests are a great return to the past when music was a social activity engaged in by friends and family, but like anything else, it can get out of control.

Men profess to be lovers of music, but for the most part they give no evidence in their opinions and lives that they have heard it.  ~ Henry David Thoreau

For several reasons, I don't think the recorder ensemble will be involved in Porchfest. So, really, it has simply proved an occasion for me to supply them with some Henningmusick.

Looking good, Karl! I'm happy to see that you're doing well. Hoping good fortunate continues to smile upon you.

Here is perhaps a curious question for you @Karl Henning, but which one of your compositions had the longest gestation period? White Nights perhaps?

Absolutely White Nights, by a margin measured in years.

After that, probably the Mass. I started by writing the Kyrie for Paul, just as a stand-alone Kyrie, with no intent at first to write a complete Mass.

Oh, that's interesting, indeed. How long did take you compose your Mass? And, yes, I knew by looking at your opus list that White Nights was quite a long gestation. Glad you got it done nevertheless!

I finished the Kyrie in July of 2012. I did not immediately bend my thought to a complete Mass. And in fact, I composed the rest of the movements out of order. Last of all was the Gloria, which I finished in June of 2016. Triad gave an excellent performance of the Gloria, but unfortunately, that is a document I do not have.

Very cool. Hopefully, there will be a full performance of your Mass in the future. And please do record it. ;D
