"A quiet secluded life in the country, with the possibility of being useful to people ... then work which one hopes may be of some use; then rest, nature, books, music, love for one's neighbour — such is my idea of happiness"

That is a great recording, too. Special nod to Sara Jakubiak who gives a compelling account of this work. I'm not sure if Arnie's free atonal period was where I would have started off, but I admire your courage. Hopefully, you're not too discouraged to continue exploring his oeuvre.

Oh, Karl. This is truly magical piece. I often wonder why this SQ isn't talked about that much. For me, it's one of Fauré's great works.

That might be a tough first encounter. (I love the piece but haven't heard this version, and of course, vocalists are a very personal thing.)

You've likely received a lot of suggestions, but here's another one, Verklärte Nacht. Originally for string sextet, here's the widely performed version for string orchestra.

Music aside (and I look forward to hearing it), love this cover!

Great music. Only problem is that Pizzetti was a pro-Mussolini fascist guy.

Symphonic Addict

Jones: Symphony No. 9
Cowell: String Quartets

The current annihilation of a people on this planet (you know which one it is) is the most documented and at the same time the most preposterously denied.

This just in... Pizzetti is still dead, so we're in the clear.

Schoenberg: Chamber Symphony No. 1, twice

Chailly, Deutsches Symphonie Orchester Berlin

Mehta, Los Angeles Symphony Orchestra

I find Chailly too cool in this expressionist music.  He and the orchestra seems to skate the surface.  Mehta seems more in tune with the style, and the recording is more close up.

Symphonic Addict

Berio: Piano Sonata

This was interesting. It's not so much complex to follow and it captures the attention quite well. Favourably impressed.

That whole disc is fantastic. I especially enjoy the Six Encores. Beautiful work.

You unintentionally have a flavor of Robert Simpson in your music! I say unintentionally because I don't think you listen to or like his music. :) But some of the passages strongly bring him to mind for me.

Most interesting! I've not yet explored Simpson's music. Someday!

That's interesting as I've always thought of a Karl's music to have a kiwi and strawberry flavor. Well, we all have different tastes! ;D

Der lächelnde Schatten

Now playing Ives Symphony No. 4

This Ives Dudamel cycle is fantastic. The opening of this Ives 4th is appropriately ominous yet not without an aura of mystique about it. Anyone who says Dudamel can't conduct or that he's only good in highly rhythmic music are dead wrong. This is an Ives cycle to cherish!
