Der lächelnde Schatten

I wonder if the Fabio Luisi Schoenberg project on DG is going anywhere? There was a digital release of Verklärte Nacht, but then there was complete silence.

It seems there hasn't been new information about other recordings yet, I hope this Schoenberg project will be carried on too.....

That recording of Gurrelieder, conducted by R. Chailly, with Siegfried Jerusalem, Brigitte Fassbaedner, and Hans Hotter is wonderful.

Only the old 1970's recording by Pierre Boulez with Jess Thomas surpasses it...at times, mainly because of the incredible power of Waldemar's last song (Du, Strenger Richter Droben) in that performance.

I did attempt the Gurrelieder,  but I confess to having struggled to listen very far in - not, perhaps, because of any lack whatsoever in Schoenberg, but in my general lack of appreciation of vocal music.

I do occasionally keep trying, though!

Good for you. The challenge which vocal music poses for you prevents me from recommending Erwartung. In this score, Schoenberg made a point of not repeating material. That makes the piece exciting for some and disorienting for others. I love the piece, and I'd be curious where it lies for you, but there's a highly dramatic soprano lying in wait for you.

That Chailly GL is among the best I've heard.  Thanks for reminding me of it - I have been listening and enjoying it very much.  :)

I used to not take notice of Gurre-Lieder since it predates what I consider Schoenberg's quintessential style - but it is such a rich and rewarding work, I've changed my mind about it.

I did give that a go, but found it really hard listening 🫣. Again, I hold up my hands to being at fault, but I didn't find much joy in it, unfortunately.

Consider watching a performance: if you can find the performance at the Metropolitan Opera with Jessye Norman, you might change your mind.

I found it: no English subtitles.

Here is a performance with English subtitles:

Clearly I should never have tried to respond so late at night!!!   ;D

Here is the Jessye Norman performance of Erwartung, without, however, English subtitles!

I've already enthused about this on the WAYLT thread, but am thrilled to see that this:

has at last, 50 years on, appeared on CD, both in here:

and here:

I've never heard a better Op.9 - not just brilliantly played by the mid-70s Sinfonietta, but every detail of tempo and phrasing exactly & triumphantly right.

I know some do not like to post large images (I'm not one of them), but I can barely make out the print identifying works and especially performers on these.  Of course, I'm 73, and my eyesight is not what used to be.   ;)

I think that if you click on the images that @DaveF posted, they'll enlarge (at least that's the case on my tablet).

Thanks, that worked for #1 and #3 but not #2.  I managed to figure it out since I have these in my Spotify Schoenberg folder.

Oddly enough, if I click on no.2, it actually shrinks.  But it's the same performers in all 3 (since they're the same performances).
