Quote from: Florestan on April 14, 2025, 05:41:48 AMAnd your thoughts on the music, if I may ask for them?

Well, the E flat major quartet is clearly Mozart in an extremely contented mood. And I've no complaints about that as a way to close out an evening (guess I will leave K.494 until next time  ;D )

French Opera Overtures.
See back cover for more details.
Estonian National Symphony Orchestra, Neeme Järvi.
Recording venue Estonia Concert Hall, Tallinn; 9 June (live) (Le Domino noir), 10 June (live) (Les Cloches de Corneville), and 13–17 June (other works) 2022.

A new release in which Järvi exceels and this CD does him especially proud at his age. He did not miss a beat or accent, it has as much energy as when he started his career. I have a huge amount of CD's with Järvi at the helm. These Overtures are smashing and great fun and all the pieces are played with virtuosity and verve. Well recorded and performed.
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

Pejavevic, Piano Quartet in d minor, cpo

A more succinct work than the piano Quintet I listened to yesterday. A work in late romantic style, dense with ideas and vivid harmonies. Resolutely performed.
Formerly Scarpia (Scarps), Baron Scarpia, Ghost of Baron Scarpia, Varner, Ratliff, Parsifal, perhaps others.

Estonian National Symphony Orchestra, Neeme Järvi.
Recording venue Estonia Concert Hall, Tallinn; 1 May 2012 and 29 June–2 July 2015.

One of the best Strauss recordings I have, and the sound is one of the best I ever heard from Chandos.
This is a real feast to hear this again. I played it more than a dozen times, and still revel in Strauss's compositions. The performance could not be better.

There's something special about these composers who worked so painstakingly slow and produced so little that I find highly appealing.

Symphonic Addict

Honegger: Symphonies 4 and 5

Deliciae basilienses is one of those pieces that blossoms like a beautiful flower with each listen. There's an elusive and thought-provoking element to the music (including the exquisite orchestration) that makes it quite special and somewhat restrained, but not always sounds like that as some passages of controlled vivacity emerge from time to time. At first I didn't like this symphony much, but now it's probably my 2nd favorite after the Liturgique. The performance of López-Cobos conducting the Orchestre de chambre de Lausanne is gorgeous and transparent. Di tre re couldn't be more contrasting, this is a pessimistic, anguished, raw piece, rather compact in its musical discourse. I found the tuba to have a prominent role in several passages, underpinning the dark hue of the work. A stupendous rendition from Järvi and the DNRSO.

The current annihilation of a people on this planet (you know which one it is) is the most documented and at the same time the most preposterously denied.

Quote from: AnotherSpin on April 14, 2025, 03:45:28 AMToscanini's Missa Solemnis, recorded live in 1940, is a performance of unmistakable intensity — pure Toscanini through and through. But what truly draws you in is the way Milanov's radiant voice intertwines with Björling's stunning vocal clarity. It's deeply devotional, yes, yet touched with just enough operatic drama to make it utterly compelling. Remarkably, the sound quality is excellent for such an early recording. I'll admit it — I've just listened to the Sanctus and Agnus Dei twice in a row. Simply couldn't resist.

I think the Agnus Dei is quite special there.   Kipnis was Ukrainian I think.
