Doing a little survey of recordings of Haydn's violin concertos.

This is nr. 3, after I auditioned:

One of my favourite female composers, and this recording is close to my heart. Eight rerun.
Well recorded and performed.

Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

Minnesota Orchestra, Eiji Oue.
Recorded in 1997, at the Orchestra Hall, Minneapolis.

An explosive orchestral tour de force!

This is by all means a reference recording, and a fantastic workout for your HIFI, if it can cope with it. By all means I think this must one of the best SOTA sounds I ever heard. Listen and be convinced. It blew me literally out of my socks. Just try track 5, "Baba Yaga" by Lyadov, that will make you a convert. Truly amazing.

Nice album, Harry. I like their "Exotic Dances from the Opera" as well.

Thank you, bookmarked. I was not aware there were more of the kind, looking forward to them

Quote from: Roasted Swan on April 24, 2025, 11:02:46 PMOne of the few major RVW works (particularly of the choral ones) that I just do not enjoy (can't really put my finger on why either)
For many years I had no time for this rather twee (in places) 'Ye Olde English Teashoppe' type work but I have come to enjoy it much more in recent years.

Really a gorgeous and moving work. This particular recording is dedicated to those who died in WWI. I've been reading a good bit about WWI lately and, as with any war, it was a complete and utter travesty of the human race. I've been a pacifist all of my life and nothing will ever change this for me.

Agreed, a moving piece. Similarly BBC MM CD is also dedicated to the fallen of WWI and beside Gurney also includes 'Oration'.
You must have a very good opinion of yourself to write a symphony - John Ireland.

I opened the door people rushed through and I was left holding the knob - Bo Diddley.

New Release.

Vox Feminae.
See back cover for details.
Les Kapsber'girls.
Recorded in January 2023 at the Moosestudio in Evje, Norway.

Second rerun.
A very impressive ensemble, perfect voices but not too much. They create magic, and sound as innocent as newly born babes. I was flabbergasted by their presence and presentation of the music. They have chosen well, in composers, and stunned me again in admiration, thus I recommend this recording, you can not stop yourself liking them and their voices. And with this recording I close of my listening day.

That looks like a great disc. I believe I have it as I own a lot of those BBC Music Magazine CDs.

Stravinsky: Ode
LPO, Jurowski

Never heard this before, clearly my loss as it's delightful and shot through with Stravinsky's impeccable sensibilities. A commission from Koussevitzky for an orchestral work in memory of his wife, Natalia, it's also very touching.

I need to revisit this work, but I remember rather enjoying as well. But I'm a big Stravinsky fan anyway. I love all periods of his music.
