Quote from: Der lächelnde Schatten on April 29, 2025, 06:23:58 AMInteresting comparison. I think RVW's Pastoral is so singular that there's simply nothing that sounds like it. The way it was constructed and the flow of the musical narrative is truly something to behold.

I once spoke to another RVW fan on another forum who made this very same statement. Personally, I would be reluctant to make such a claim because I love the others so much. Symphony No. 5, for example, holds a special place in my heart.

I'd want to keep them all(!) but if forced it would come down to 3 or 5 for me.....

Mozart: Piano Trio no.3 in B flat, K.502

Probably a first listen to both the work and this album (other than excerpts to check the disc worked properly when it arrived). Excellent throughout.

Mozart didn't get this trio published with no.2, which was written not that long before. Instead it had to wait a couple of years and was published with nos. 4 and 5. The Henle edition (which told me the publication information) regards no.3 as the very best of Mozart's trios, so it's puzzling he didn't get out to print as soon as possible.

Hyper-specific niche albums like this are why I'm so glad streaming exists!

It sounds like it uses a period instrument, too.

Quote from: Florestan on April 28, 2025, 10:01:52 AMMunchinger was a very fine Schubertian. His relevant recordings are conveniently boxed here:

He is. Possibly better known for baroque recordings but more then one string to the Munchinger bow.

A whole bunch of people I had never heard of before. Contents on Presto: https://www.prestomusic.com/classical/products/9591134--fantasie-romantique-19th-century-eastern-european-guitar-music

Johann Mertz is probably the only even slightly famous name there. I especially loved the two Ukrainian works at the beginning.

The K.501 are for piano 4-hands, and I have to admit my interest went up when I found there was a recording by Perahia and Lupu.

Even better...

However Perahia/Lupu isn't bad at all.

I'm afraid I don't feel much of a need to listen to jangly pianos in the name of authenticity. Though they're not as jangly as some.

Really? That's a pretty tall order! Yuja Wang is an amazing pianist, but what about all of the pianists that have recorded this repertoire before her? I'm thinking of Earl Wild (possibly my favorite Rachmaninov PC cycle), Ashkenazy (twice), Andsnes et. al.
