The K.501 are for piano 4-hands, and I have to admit my interest went up when I found there was a recording by Perahia and Lupu.
The fact that they stand by the piece signifies!

Quote from: Madiel on April 29, 2025, 06:14:13 AMUnfortunately the national classical radio station does her music to death. Australian and accessible? Perfect. Let's play her shorter pieces at every possible opportunity.

To be honest I'd probably be more interested if I hadn't heard her name quite so many times when I happen to have the radio on.

I feel your pain.

There are two very good complete collections of the lieder of Hugo Wolf: the one pictured above which came out in 2010, and the 11 volume series (2013-2023) on Stone Records. Volume 1 is pictured below.

After Levit and Kempff, Arrau is really something special. It is a much richer sound compared to the others, I love it.

Quote from: Der lächelnde Schatten on April 28, 2025, 06:45:49 PMNow playing Villa-Lobos Floresta do Amazonas

A sprawling nearly 80 minute work, which I haven't listened into in ages (or so it seems). I highly recommend this to the V-L fans who love Chôros No. 10, "Rasga o Coração" or any of the larger scale Chôros and want to hear a work on an even larger scale. As a member of another forum once said this is everything, but the kitchen sink jungle music. You don't know where exactly the music is going, but the journey is wondrous, intoxicating and exotic.

A music professor named Karl Haas had a radio show for decades called Adventures in Good Music.

Villa-Lobos was an obvious favorite of his: your last sentence reminded me of his show, because of the Adventure involved in exploring the music of Villa-Lobos.

For those who might now know Villa-Lobos, Karl Haas sometimes played this piece as a way to introduce it:

"Meet Miss Ruth Sherwood, from Columbus, Ohio, the Middle of the Universe!"

- Brian Aherne introducing Rosalind Russell in  My Sister Eileen (1942)

Very cool! They don't make radio programs like that anymore.

No, unfortunately!  The same goes for major, prime-time networks offering concerts by major orchestras.  I still recall NBC broadcasting Toscanini concerts on television: of course, the sound left much to be desired, depending on the kind of television you had!

Karl Haas also pushed Francis Poulenc as an example of contemporary music:

Arnell rates very highly with me. He is a great British composer, I think.

Wholeheartedly agreed! I praise myself lucky that I bought all the recordings of his orchestral and Chamber music. For me Arnell is a genius.
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

Sculthorpe: Piano Sonatina and Piano Sonata

Somewhat surprised to hear how serious and pensive these works are, but none the worse for that. They pack a lot of great ideas in their short lengths. Favourably impressed.

The current annihilation of a people on this planet (you know which one it is) is the most documented and at the same time the most preposterously denied.
