Dallapiccola: Canti di Prigionia
Esa-Pekka Salonen et al

This is very striking music indeed. I can't say I'm bowled over by this performance though. The Sylvain Cambreling on Classics Glor is way more atmospheric and involving.

More Stravinsky ballets transcribed by the composer for solo piano: Jeu de cartes and Le Baiser de la fée. Played by Alexey Zuev.

CD5 of this set:

Jeu de cartes is actually quite listenable in this "black and white", which I imagine was conceived for rehearsal purposes, but sounds much better than what would expect from a purely "practical" product. The Fairy's Kiss might be interesting, as it must be a sort of back translation; the ballet is based on piano pieces by Tchaikovsky, but the booklet says that what Stravinsky "presents them in the mirror of his own style". Let's see (but I do not know the original piano original anyway, so any niceties will be lost on me... ::)

Holmboe: String Quartets 6-8 (Kontra Quartet)

The difference of interpretation and sound quality with respect to the recordings of the Nightingale SQ is quite evident. I definitely prefer them to the Kontra, but at least these performances didn't disappoint.
The current annihilation of a people on this planet (you know which one it is) is the most documented and at the same time the most preposterously denied.

This disc filled with lesser-known works by Respighi has no waste, from the Suite in E major with its pre-echoes of Braga Santos to the imposing and majestic Preludio, Corale e Fuga, and all very well played I have to say. A stunning recording.

Love the recording (and cheapy cover art)!

Certainly. Many Marco Polo cover arts show the poor taste of the graphic designers.

Presumably it's a photo of Resphigi in his youth.

The image on the Pizzetti CD posted a few replies earlier, however, seems to make no sense.

The Villa-Lobos Roberto Duarte recordings on Marco Polo aren't so bad as at least two of them feature paintings from Henri Rousseau. 8)

Continuing on with the Arnold symphonies --- now playing Symphony No. 2, Op. 40

Yes, it is the young Respighi.

Do you mean this one?

Perhaps there is a connection with the myth of Fedra (Phaedra), but I'm not sure if in the mythological Greece appeared elephants to be represented in temples.

And very cool they are. Love those paintings.

It's a scene from a 1914 Italian silent film, and represents the "Temple of Moloch"

Right, and just found the same thing. It's related to Sinfonia del fuoco.

One of my favourite albums by Paul O'Dette! :)

It was issued back in 1987 (Nonesuch) and I only discovered it streaming, since it has been long out of print. Hard to find on disc for a reasonable price on this side of the pond. I ordered this new (after 38 years!) from Amazon US, which collects the EU VAT with the order so no import hassle.
