Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

"When Time hath gnawed our bones to dust, yet friendship's echo shall not rust"

Very good works indeed.
The current annihilation of a people on this planet (you know which one it is) is the most documented and at the same time the most preposterously denied.

Dvorak: Symphonies 4 and 5

Prodigious musical richness in these two symphonies.

Not as interesting, to me, as some of Guerra-Peixe's orchestral music, and the violin player is also not world-class. Unlike some of the Naxos Brazil violin sonata recordings, this one is distant rather than close.

NP: Adams The Wound-Dresser

One of the most exquisite works in Adams' oeuvre, IMHO. Brooding, haunting with glimpses of light. The text setting and orchestration are absolutely incredible. This is Sanford Sylvan's second recording of The Wound-Dresser and is more expansive than his earlier one with Adams and the Orchestra of St. Luke's (on Nonesuch). This one with Carlos Kalmar/Oregon Symphony is 20 minutes and earlier version is 19 minutes. I'm not sure if this makes much of a difference, but Kalmar provides an incredibly beautiful accompaniment. All of this is aided by Pentatone's usual high standards in audio engineering.

Hindemith: Konzertmusik for viola and orchestra and Trauermusik for viola and strings

Incredible pieces and very different each other. The former displays plenty of energy, virtuoso writing and wit, whereas the latter is one of Hindemith's most touching compositions. IIRC, Hindemith wrote that piece in just a few hours which is already impressive.

Count me as a fan of Nott's Mahler on Tudor. The only performance I didn't think much of was Das Lied and this only because I don't like the tenor/baritone configuration.

I like a lot of Martinu's music, string quartets, operas, oratorios, symphonies, concertos etc but I'm afraid the two concertante works here (both for piano trio and string orchestra) are definitely not among them. This is Martinu in super neo-classical mode. The string orchestra's aggressive, unvaried see-sawing motions got on my nerves rather quickly. My reservations are mostly about the first work ('Concert'). The other one ('Concertino') is less grating to the ear.

La Bagarre (1926) is a fun orchestral romp lasting just 10 minutes. It is contemporary with Honegger's Rugby and Pacific 231 and I found a certain kinship between these works. They are very much in the mood of celebrating the Age of the Machine. The aeroplane depicted on the disc cover is the subject of Martinu's work.
