Not so much bad as it is a head-scratcher.

Had the photograph been alone?

Were these musicians alone and then found each other?

And while they may not be alone, can I just point out the oddness of a cover with five people claiming to be an octet?

It instantly conjured up that peak propaganda moment in Russia — the grand parade of stick-mounted portraits of "heroic grandpas" who allegedly fought in the war.

Truly baffling.

They have come to rescue Stravinsky from his lonely obscurity?  ::)

I think you're right. I had considered they were the other composers, which would explain the Stravinsky photo, but I didn't consider the conductor so it didn't add up.

A good example of what one of my professors in grad school referred to as COIK-- Clear Only If Known.

These were released by the same label in the same year (1993)!!!

This photograph simply says: we had no money for a (real) photographer, an art director, a graphic designer.  :o

I have the Brahms. It was my first Brahms CD in the early days of my journey into classical music (late 90s). I think it is a good release. Admittedly the cover art for these two releases look ridiculously similar. Maybe it is a mishap and they intended to use different paintings.
Spatial distortion is a serious problem deteriorating headphone listening.

I believe by 1993 Naxos had begun to leave its "cheapo label" phase behind.

Proof that Brahms is but a pale imitation of Mendelssohn.
Every single post on the forum is unnecessary. Including the ones that are interesting or useful.

Well, the graphic designers at Sony really strained their brains to the limit with these two:

Someone said "This is the only surviving photograph of Webern", and the others believed him.

We have gone from "worst looking CD/LP artwork" to "graphic designers are lazy and lack creativity."

I'm inclined to think the two go hand-in-hand.

It took me some time to stop thinking of them in similar terms as the Laserlight label. (anyone remember that one?)

I do! This is a keeper, my introduction to the piece and a great recording:
