Spending my morning in Brazil with the piano music of Fernandez and Guarnieri.

I would describe them both as loads of fun! There is a complete Guarnieri set on Naxos across two CDs, so Jones is essentially choosing his favorite half of the music. The Fernandez was really really good. The three Brazilian suites were very "pops" and colorful. The Sonata Breve had a ton of energy. The big surprise was a gorgeous romantic early nocturne (Op. 3) at the very end.

If you do not have the Naxos disc with Guarnieri concertos 1/2/3 that is a must. 1 and 2 are Gershwin level successes and 3 is more like if a Bartok concerto was in the jungle. Amazing stuff.

Between 1849 and 1853, Liszt completed Harmonies poétiques et religieuses, a cycle of piano pieces based on poems by Lamartine and texts from the Catholic liturgy. As musicologists are increasingly pointing out today, the entire cycle has a spiritual dramaturgy that is intended to lead to a religiously relivable transformation from suffering to joy.

I think that may be the best recording of the Balakirev, and it sounds excellent in this new mastering.
