I don't understand the impulse to claim an artist is "over-rated," which is an implicit assertion that those who revere the artist are somehow deluded. Isn't it enough to say that that an artist's work "is not to my taste?"

A good point, and an interesting topic.

I think if something is not to my taste or it doesn't do it for me, the logical next step may be to think it's overrated. After all, the word exists for a reason. And what would be the reason ?

Same thing for 'underrated'. If I consider a composer is underrated, it doesn't mean I consider those who hold that opinion as ignorant. There are tons of reasons someone might hold a different opinion.

I suppose one could just say 'it's not to my taste', but the people who feel strongly about their own good taste 😝 will feel tempted to use over/underrated to express their opinion.

Haydn is underrated.

Ever since the 19th century decided that a true artist needed a bit of torture and tragedy in their life.

He did have a terrible marriage, but he seems to have overcome that with a minimum of fuss and so it didn't qualify him like Mozart's short life or Beethoven's deafness. Haydn was a nice person who lived a long life, and therefore wasn't considered a genius on the same level despite inventing a large part of classical music.

Sticking with pop music, I can't stand Steely Dan (e.g. the much ballyhooed album Aja).  Not only do I dislike this style of music, but I can't take more than 15 seconds of Don Fagen's oily singing, so his solo albums are unlistenable for me as well.

I have an opinion which is popular among the general population but generally unpopular in classical music spaces - in my opinion, there is a great deal of excellent modern pop music being created. For example, I would be surprised if people here considered this to be mindless drivel (though that in itself would be an interesting unpopular opinion for this topic):

I thought that was a pretty good combination of musical styles, much more listenable than the current pop music unwillingly heard in public spaces. My similar unpopular opinion is that music is still progressing and it's being led by heavy metal artists 🎸.
