Quote from: Belle on February 10, 2026, 12:41:14 PMYes, thanks for the complicated question!!  There's a rich history, as we know, of great artists and their relationships with Beethoven but I'll refer to the modern era and nominate Igor Levit.  After that Stephen Kovacevich.
Quote from: Belle on February 10, 2026, 04:34:11 PMFor those unfamiliar with Levit's Beethoven Klaviersonaten:

I'll give it a shot.  Thanks.

As for Kovacevich, well, I'm sorry that I bought this set:

It's not my cup of tea.  I prefer the ones/performances by Gilels and Moravec (though not complete or only a few of them).  Hope to explore the ones by Brautigam further too.

Anyway, going off topic here...apologies.

I also like the Brautigam very much and can't seem to be able to get it in Australia through Amazon now matter how hard I try (along with huge numbers of other CDs).

Wow!  That's surprising!  So, they're not listed there?  :(

Perhaps a mod would be kind enough to shift this (and earlier posts) to the Beethoven sonatas thread?

Our government imposed a tax on all Australians buying products bought through Amazon and I think they figure that our country isn't worth the effort so have restricted what's available to us.  Especially music, books, scores etc.  I can't blame them, honestly!!

Does that apply to all Amazons (eg, Amazon US, Amazon Japan, Amazon France, etc), or just Amazon US?

Have you considered using third party buyers?  Something like https://au.buynship.com/

Hold the phone!!  I just got a notice that the Brautigam Beethoven Sonatas have been despatched to me - after 3 long months!!  That's a good outcome for Amazon in Australia.

I'm sure I am grateful that Vaughan Williams has never adversely affected my GI tract. Probably those seated near me, too.

Never one to allow personal favoritism to cloud his rigorous objectivity I was interested to see that recently Leonard Slatkin has made it into the TOP 5 conductors (ever!) of;

Rachmaninov
Elgar
&
Gershwin

I like Slatkin's work a lot - in fact his 2 disc vox box of Gershwin is one of my favourite collections - but that's literally 2 CD's worth over a lifetime.  His Elgar & Rachmaninov are also perfectly good but "greatest ever" is simply nonsense.  Especially when you see the notable absentees from those lists..... (no Handley in Elgar for instance).  I bet Slatkin will appear in the RVW list next!

EDIT 4 days later:  Hah!!  Slatkin is officially one of the 5 BEST RVW conductors ever - who knew!?

I like and own most of Slatkin's recordings of American music, but other than that, his Elgar and RVW, which I also own, doesn't quite measure up to the greats in these composers' music.

I'll clue you in: he can't either. (But neither can he sing, which has never been a deterrent.)

It is astounding to me that this man has had such a devoted following (73K subscribers so far). His first year or so of videos where he's more low-key and not acting like some kind of obnoxious buffoon are, for me, his best videos. When he started the whole flailing arms thing and singing is when his channel took a nosedive. But also how his biases have, over time, completely shattered any hope of objectivity, which the whole notion of being objective is something you would expect from someone who claims to be a "professional critic".

I listened to 6 tonight (Slatkin), but my bowels have remained intact. Perhaps a different recording?
