Don't say things like that without due cause. You'll have some of us in paroxysms of excitement... ;D ;D

Only reason not to vote for the Dvorak is its richness - like a light fruit cake crossed with a chocolate mud cake. SO much good stuff!

(I voted Dvorak.)

(I'm hungry.)
:D I love this post!

Me too. And the Kokkonen. And the Sallinen. And so it goes...............

None have risen to the top for me.

I chose the Shostakovich 2nd Cello Concerto and then realized there was an option for other!
Otherwise I'd have chosen the Prokofiev Symphony-Concerto.
But....... the Shostakovich isn't far behind (possibly a 2nd favorite), so no worries.  8)

Too bad LvB did not crank one of these out.  8)

Dutilleux is my favorite with Carter a close second

Voted for Lutoslawski

I haven't heard the Dvorak or the Shostakovich in Eb, but I was awfully glad that the Haydn D and the Schumann were there!

Guido

Oh my goodness!!! You MUST hear these pieces - the Dvorak is the greatest cello concerto of all, and one of the finest romantic concertos of all. I'm surprised that you haven't heard it actually! Shostakovich's two concertos are also classics of the genre.
Geologist.

Dvorak + Fournier + Szell = only $7 on Amazon. One of my three or four favorite performances of any work, ever. :)

If it makes you feel better, Andy, I've still only heard one Mahler symphony...and not a single vocal piece by Wagner.

Yes, it is worth as I said before, at least a 1/2 vote.   ;D

Yup, Andy.  You gotta hear the Dvorak!  I just got it for myself a few weeks ago.  The legendary Rostropovich/Karajan :o :o (Hello Andy!!), Berlin Philharmonic recording.

I heard the Shosty cello concertos for the first time a couple of days ago, from a 3-disc EMI set of the complete concertos. They're a bit of a mixed bag, but I think perhaps his best in the concerto genre. Gorgeous, amazing cadenzas, and the second half of the 1st's final movement really goes off. Soloists were fine (Tortelier and Mork) but the orchestras were too relaxed - I think they should be sleep-deprived and loaded up on coffee to really get the Shostakovich feel right. And the woodwinds should shriek more!

Until a few months ago this one had somehow passed me by too, and more the poorer I was for that. Warhorse or not (and other great concerti notwithstanding) this has to be my favorite, right up there with the Shostakovich Violin. If it is of any use to you the first recording I heard was the Rostropovich/Karajan  borrowed from the library. Or if it's just a quick listen you want (to hear what all the fuss is about) then there are at least 3 videos on youtube of the concerto (including a Rostropovich). Now you have no excuse....
