I know because I was just at Borders and some other stores and the CD sections are getting smaller and smaller.

I think it's (for the moment) more like that physical CD-stores are dissapearing.
Just look at this forum: an enormous portion of on line orders - I myself shop brick-and-mortar only for bargains.

Really? I can't find bargains in stores that sell new CDs; Borders, for instance, can be relied on to cost $3-$5 more per disc than the Internet. I do shop in physical stores only for bargains - but only in used shops. You're lucky if your shops give you better deals ... though perhaps not as lucky as Harry  :D

Yeah, it's depressing.  I often think that if I were trying to get into classical music now I'd have a lot harder time doing it than even 3-5 years ago (when I bought the bulk of my collection).  I honestly don't know if I'd have even attempted it, just because there are no stores left with a decent selection -- the internet's great, but a newbie in particular can benefit from a well-stocked store to browse and get an idea of what's out there (at least I did).  I can still vividly remember the first time I walked into the Tower Classical annex in Washington, DC; my Mastercard clawed it's way out of my wallet, ran madly up and down the aisles, burst threw a window, and hurtled itself screaming to the street below.

And honestly, it's not like I live in the sticks.  I'm on the east coast of the US, about 1/2 hour south of Philadelphia, right off I-95.  I'd be happy to occasionally drive a couple of hours for a decently stocked classical music selection, but so far as I can tell, since Tower closed there's no such thing anymore.   :'(  I've tried the Princeton Record Exchange, but it's a dim shadow of its former self, and New York is a bit more of a hike than I'm willing to contemplate.  Grrr...
The man that hath no music in himself,
Nor is not moved with concord of sweet sounds,
Is fit for treasons, stratagems, and spoils.
The motions of his spirit are dull as night,
And his affections dark as Erebus.
Let no such man be trusted.

-- William Shakespeare, The Merchant of Venice

But why should anyone invest in a physical inventory of classical discs, aside from things like "Vivaldi for Cheese Parties"?  People who buy Classical CDs in quantity do so online.  The casual listeners are going more to MP3s.   I do wonder why stores do not set up something where they can burn CDs from an online catalog while you wait

Yes Brian, I guess I am lucky.. though perhaps not as lucky as Harry.. ;D
Two stores in Amsterdam (one hour away) with a large stock of classical CD's and they have special offers on overstocks, special promotions, etc. One of them also sells used CD's and cut-outs. Then there is a small store entirely specialised in overstocks & cut-outs (all new) just a 5 minutes walk from my work - a sure stop at every lunch break. Add to that all the bargains & special offers on the net, and I am fairly well provided with opportunities... :)

I remember when a local Best Buy (Yes! Best Buy!) had a huge section JUST FOR CLASSICAL!  ::) But that was a long time ago. Man, it was cheap.

Those stores have given up on the classical market - screw 'em.  The internet has everything I want to buy, and there's always the Naxos Music Library as a supplement.

Since when is BordersTM a microcosm of life?

I was just at SuperAmerica, and they were out of eggs ......... What's happened to all of the chickens?

MN Dave

It's not just Borders, son.

Get 'em while you can. ;D

They still have a small one near me. Nearly every disc there is in one of two categories:
- the Classics for Pleasure [I think] reissue label for $6
- the Three Tenors

No, this was HUGE. They had everything a classical boy could wish for.

Given that MDT reports 65,000 CD titles available, your panic seems premature.

What's really disappearing are posters to this board that have something interesting to say.  In a relatively short time Nigel, Mark and Larry Rinkel have packed it in.

Nigel? If it's the Nigel I'm thinking of, it was quite a ways back. There are many interesting post-ers remaining on the board IMO.

Posters come and go - nothing to worry about.
