Anyone heard this recording of Boulez and the New York Philharmonic in Handel's Water Music and Music for the Royal Fireworks?  On paper, it sounds mighty strange, but the comments on Amazon are quite positive.  (I do realize these will not be HIP performances...)

Thanks for the Suitner recommendation.  I've added it to my Amazon wishlist.   :)

And his Brahms set.

They're not bad at all. It's big-band Handel, to be sure, but Boulez has the NYPO move with precision and grace to create an effect of lightness where one would expect some density.

Thanks for all of the Dvorak symphony cycle recommendations.  I have expanded the field of contenders; but I also have a better idea of the merits and drawbacks of each. :)

What about Neumann/Česká filharmonie? I think there are even 2 cycles from them, but I may be mistaken. I only know what I think is the later one, from the 80s, and I really like those recordings. The sound is a little bright and scrathcy, but I can live with that.

He already has that one (mentioning in the listening thread yesterday). I agree that it is a top choice - better than the newer Supraphon mixed studio/live cycle with Válek which is a bit... plain.

Yes there is an earlier analog cycle by Neumann/CzPO from 1968-73. It's available only from HMV Japan. Not that expensive either.
I'd be tempted if they'd ship, they wouldn't so I'm not.

What do you mean, they don't ship? I have ordered stuff from hmv.co.jp a number of times.

To where I live.

So they ship to Azerbaijan, but not to Serbia...hmm...that would make me think!

Miloš, let me know if you need to send it this way again first and then I would be happy to shoot it over to you.

Me first!  ;D

Keemun, later this summer I will be writing a big comparative review of all the major Dvorak symphony cycles. I have access to and will be reviewing the following - Kubelik, Kertesz, Rowicki, Suitner, Neumann [digital], Anguelov, Gunzenhauser, Pesek, and Jarvi. It should be a fun and challenging endeavor, and will probably take weeks to finish ... but I really do look forward to listening to 81 Dvorak symphony performances!  ;D

If it sways your vote any, Mark loves the Anguelov set, as do I, though my primary preference is currently Suitner. Disclaimer: I have yet to listen in full to Kertesz, Rowicki, Neumann, Pesek and Jarvi.

Yeah, we look forward to a review of Dvořák performances from Texas - about as interesting and relevant as hearing about the latest trends in Country Music from reviewers in North Korea.... ::)

Jolly good Brian, that should be indeed taunting and interesting, knowing how much you love these works. I for one, will be looking forward to this project. ;D

About moving to Azerbaijan? Dunno, Azerbaijani climate can get harsh, I prefer warmer places. I was considering Saipan, not sure where exactly is that but according to HMV Japan it's in Europe and they ship there as well.
