I have been collecting classical CDs for years, mostly brahms, tchaikovsky, wagner and mahler....and it will be great if anyone can recommend their favorites so that i can have some more great recordings in my cabinet........

anyway, its 4 here now so i guess i should go to bed now  ;)

Only 4?  Why, you have hours of listening time ahead of you!  ;D

Seriously, welcome calvin, and nice to have another Aussie on the board.  (You probably know that Rob, the creator of GMG and now in Canada, moved there from Canberra.)

Enjoy yourself!

O, boy, you do not know what you are asking. You will be flooded with all kinds of recommendations far outnumbering the coins in your wallet, so be prepared, and of course you are most welcome.
Tchaikovsky, I would say one word, KARAJAN, Mahler also one word TENNSTEDT. I am being friendly, its all budget! ;D ;D

Calvin, Welcome. We have had lots of discussions involving the composers you mention. If you use the search facility you will see what is on the site. Perhaps you can revive some old threads for us.

lol....as long as they are good ones i won't mind spending all my pennies in my pocket......  ;D

so far i have Karajan's 60's,70's and 80's recordings for tchaikovsky.......and i think his 70's is the best .........what would you say about that?

for mahler, i have Karajan, Solti, Abbado, Bernstein, Bertini, Kubelik, Levine, Giulini, Edo de Waart, Rattle, Mazaal, Boulez, Haitink and Barbirolli but not Tennstedt..(though i have some of his wagner). I'll go and search his work right now :)........thanks for this suggestion.......harry

Yes, Erik Satie, some say what is written about him is more interesting than his music, and I suppose that is true to a certain extent. He was a very eccentric fellow. With the advent of youtube; I'd say listen there first, and then go from there.

ya i wonder how people can write something like "play like a nightingale with a toothache", "work it out yourself", "open your head" in a piece....i suppose we should give a big hand to those who understand these instructions.........

I was under the mistaken impression that you yet had to complete your collection, but given this information, you are already fully equipped dude!
I would prefer the 60's Tchaikovsky from Karajan, but really the 70's is awesome too.
And let me add to your already overflowing Mahler discography, by mentioning Inbal and Neumann too, especially Neumann, he is a Mahler experience out of this world altogether. It is a experience rather out of the main road, but will add greatly to you understanding the genius of Mahler. I was also happily surprised by the fact that you have Edo de Waart, would that be the fourth with Elly Ameling?

Welcome to the forum!  :)

Off the top of my head, here are four favourite recordings of mine, one per composer mentioned:

Renfield

Welcome aboard! You seem to have an excellent roster of composers, and recordings, if your Tchaikovsky and Mahler are of any indication.

Be quite certain you'll be expanding both soon. ;)

I don't know how much regard people give them really. I enjoy them however they choose to play them.
