Takács Maiden is fine, but I do think that the gem on that disk is the accompanying Rosamunde. Now Hagen's Rosamunde is one of the big black holes in my library, so until I get my fingers on it Takács is preferred before Italiano. Not enough Rosamunde quartets here, in other words.

For most of my life I was happy with the Italiano version (hearing them perform it live in Salzburg in 1975 cemented the deal). I still think it's a beautiful recording, one I play often, but the leaner, more intensely felt Quatuor Mosaiques is my desert island pick today. Since the A minor is my favorite Schubert quartet the Takács CD is still calling me. I'm sure I'll buy it eventually.

No love for the D minor? :(

Love it; just bought two more recordings (Busch and Hagen)

You people (Valentino & erato) are strange, having an unnamed quartet as a favourite.

:P ;)

Nothing strange about that. But if you prefer named quartets, maybe it is time to name it the Valentino et Erato Quartet.  ;D
Do what I must do, and let what must happen happen.

Of course....but the Maiden loses out to Rosamunde by a slim margin, for me.  ;D

I remember this was the case for you at one time.  ;)

:) But it's D minor, after all. It can't be down for a long time.

Need to bookmark this CD.  Sweelinck recordings are generally hard to find ...
