I'll be interested to hear your thoughts on Sinopoli.  His Mahler certainly has a following around here.  A list of the performances you'll be comparing him to would be useful too   :) 0:)

I only have one or two for each symphony, but sure, I'll post my thoughts in the listening thread as I work my way through.

I look forward to it.  I only have one or two for most symphonies too, and will do the same when you start listening.

We could maybe start a Mahler listening thread then.

From an Amazon seller I found a bargain containing two works I've wanted to add to my collection: Koussevitzky's Harris Third and Sibelius Seventh. Only 7 Euro for this twofer:

Also contains Beethoven and Tchaikovsky Fifths, Rach's Isle of the Dead, Liszt's Mephisto Waltz.

Astonishing price! For years that set has stubbornly refused to come down in price. I finally got what I considered a bargain (in Euro) but still paid two and half times what you paid! Great find, George. I'm happy for you.

My experience is somewhat different, I bought that set about three years ago from regular amazon.uk for about 25 pounds (bit under 40 euros back then). At around that time prices of universal releases used to fluctuate quite a bit at british amazon, but in recent period that almost never happens anymore.

Funny, I received some Koussevitzky only yesterday

Look what the cat dragged in:

(A note on the images re: Sergeant Rock et al.: Image size is now 275²px, which is already bigger than Amazon's big images (240²px).
Unless one were to scan in the pictures (something that should be discouraged as cumbersome, labor intensive, and upload-time increasing), it doesn't make sense go much bigger, because the low resolution won't support it. [You can tell the "Feuermann in Philly" picture is one such case.] Is this a compromise size between your military instinct of getting the ducks in line and orderly and your eyesight that dictates a softening of that stance?  ;))

I understand your concern about upsizing small low-res images: it doesn't improve legibility (your Feuermann pic is an example). I don't advocate that. I actually do scan 99% of the images I post here. I can scan, resize, upload and post a CD booklet cover almost as fast as I can locate and post a decent image from the web. I've been laughed at before for all the "work" I put in but you see, I have no life  ;D ...and graphics is a hobby I enjoy. My scanner and Photoshop stay open on my desktop most of the day.

275px is a size I can live with, and indeed is a compromise I'd endorse if we were actually going to standardize this thread. But I still needed to put on my reading glasses to read the fine print on the Beethoven covers. At 350px I could have read them easily without the need for magnifying lenses :D  But I'm not suggesting anyone should choose a size just to please a retired old fart. Just voicing my preference.

The works are a wonderful introduction.  I haven't heard the recording but it has garnered high praise.  How do you like it so far?
