Whoa, what is that and how is it?

It's on a digital album called 20th Century and Contemporary Classical Selections, Vol. 3.

And it's real good. 8)

Lutoslawski - Symphonic Variations; Little Suite; Symphony No. 2; Piano Concerto (Paleczny/Polish NRSO/Wit) Naxos

This album spans works across Lutoslawski's output, from the early rather Britten-like Symphonic Variations to the late Piano Concerto. I especially like the orchestration of the Little Suite, and how he uses chance elements in the Symphony No. 2. The highlight of the album is the Piano Concerto, which some say is a comparatively light work. I disagree, I think it is full of tension, darkness & even despair. This & the superb Cello Concerto is all I have heard so far from this great composer, I will be getting more in the future...

Varèse: Déserts - Polish National Symphony Orchestra/Lyndon-Gee

I'm also a fan of that recording. It's great how they include the electronic interludes from that piece. I can't imagine it to make as much sense if I heard a version without them in it...

I like it! :)

The sextet is scored for Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Horn, Bassoon, and Piano, and is a very well balanced composition. Contrast and conjunction, with the Piano as a murmur in the background. Technically its a very advanced work indeed.
His Piano Quintet was his second attempt at the form and dates from 1897-1901, and was dedicated to the composer and conductor Max Schillings, whom was quite a figure in the musical life of Munich. The piece won approval right away from his contemporaries. Its a work that is multi coloured all the way, with great melodic tunes, and technically on a high level. Very condensed in its execution and well performed and recorded.
Recommended.

BRUCKNER:   Symphony n. 8                   / NDR Orchestra, Schuricht  (1954)

Much better than the 7th by the same interpreters. But the orchestra is not very good and Schuricht plays the first movement too slow and seems too dense and heavy, with a poor dynamic. Besides he never reaches the dramatic and spiritual greatness of Jochum, Furtwängler or van Beinum.

Worked through Hamelin's second twofer of Haydn solo piano music.  It's as good as the first twofer!  Wonderful, clear, fun, lively - Hamelin once again proves he can be more than just technically flawless.  (Of course, those who didn't care for the first volume probably wouldn't care for this one.)  SOTA sound.
