That's what I've heard. Unfortunately, I only have his late Vienna recordings - interesting sonic experiences (especially the 2nd), but they've been wearing on me for a few years. It's about time to get a new one.

Lennie's WP Sibelius make terrific alternative recordings (and I perversely enjoy their 2nd more than almost any other of this my least favorite Sibelius symphony), but not a very satisfactory starter or only set (partial set).  I think you'll enjoy Maazel/WP, and when you're ready for something else, perhaps a cooler approach will suit.

Complete Book IV on 5 CD's - looks enticing...

Q

Que, please tell me what label, and what price, and where's the place to buy it?

Images link through to MDT in case you need to see a complete list of contents.

Are you sure that you want to go the EMI route for the Stokowski, Ray?

As for the Cortot, if you are not concerned (or picky) about SQ, then by all means grab it. However, if you are concerned about SQ, then I suggest going with the separate Naxos titles and spending the extra dough. The Naxos were mastered by the great Mark Obert Thorn.

Well, I don't know. MDT has it for about $30 and I am just wondering if it's a good buy. :)

George, thanks for the info about the Cortot - I may go with the Naxos titles for the sound and also to cherry-pick the music I'm most interested in hearing. :)

I don't know if all the Cortot EMI stuff has come out on Naxos, so you might want to check that. I know that they have released much of his Chopin. The EMI performances might all be different than the Naxos, though. Naxos tries to choose performances that have not been released yet, when possible.

Well, at 3 bones a disc, it is difficult to pass.  However, I have started doing just that more often than not.  There is this set for $12 that I recommend (and though it says 1 disc, there are 4) if you are looking to try some older recordings.

If your after the particular performances listed on the EMI, then go for the EMI.  If its good, then I will snap one after your review. :)

Harry it's on French Pierre Verany, these days a sublabel of Arion Music.

Discovered by accident that PV had reissued these recordings:

in 2005 as a complete set, but it's hard to find - but looking on the site of Arion itself - they still sell it HERE, it's also on the Amazons.

Thanks for this link. This site has quite a nice list, some of which I'd like to order as well. For example, this version of La Serva Padrona, which Amazon lists as discontinued.

Isabell Poulenard is a  amazing singer and one of my favourite soprano's of all times.
This must be a fantastic performance.
I am salivating already Hildegard.

If possible I would like some info about this box. The musicians are well known, but I would like to have a impression from someone that has this box. And where is the lowest price for this box. JPC is selling it for 50 euro's.

You'll find no general consensus on this topic--and certainly not on Pinnock's set. But perhaps the most consensus can be generated on Mackerras' set as being truly, wholly satisfying.

But the must-have Mozart Symphony Box (not the least because it doesn't bother with the early stuff) is this one:

Jens - yes, thanks for that link to your review (also saw 'extracts' of the same on Amazon) - I own the Mackerras set, plus the London works w/ Bohm; I'd like another set (all or the later ones only?), so have added Krips to my 'wish list'!

I thoroughly enjoy this opera, Harry, so I am looking forward to this recording. It is not often performed, and I just missed it at the New Jersey State Opera the other week. If this performance is as good as you think, it will more than make up for that miss. I did not realize you were such a fan of Isabelle Poulenard, though I should not be surprised since her voice has often been compared to that of Dame Emma's. I will certainly send along a CD for you to savor.  :)

Blechacz, Chopin concertos. Do I need another recording of these? Will wait for some reviews first.

The download of PC 1 is available out there. At least if  you have polish connections  0:). In any case, the answer is: you should hear this one. I've been  married to the Rubinstein-Skrowaczewski for almost 40 years, but I've found myself ogling young Blechacz ever since I heard him. Mind you, I've been ogling old Horszowski, too, so don't draw hasty conclusions ! :D
