Now is your best chance to get into really avant garde music. It just adds to the ambience.  ;D

;D

Otherwise, I generally go with AC/DC or Rage Against the Machine (pun intended.)  0:)

Picked this up a few days ago from the Hyperion 'no one loves me' section. It's my first Simpson experience. :) I put the 9th on first, as it seemed to be the one that get the most mention. First impressions? It builds and builds...

Apt description of the 9th, similar as one would describe Beethoven or Nielsen, Simpson's 2 favorite composers.

These CRD recordings are very good. I have a complete box of Debussy's piano works.

Yesterday, 3 more sets of the Haydn SQs arrived as performed by the Quatuor Festetics -  :)

So, this morning doing some comparative listening to the Op. 54/55 works w/ the groups below - I really like both of these performances quite well, and could see myself easily alternating them in the future - keepers for me!

Cool, I didn't know that. But as a matter of fact, I know nothing about Simpson. :P

Any suggestions for where to go next? I'll eventually explore the whole box, but I'm a bit flummoxed at the moment, as is often the case when faced with someone unfamiliar with quite a large output. I put on the first disc afterwards (#1 and #8), but stopped half way through - too much symphonic intensity for the day. ;D

Hence:

Precision is of lesser consequence when Chopin op. 52 is played with such feeling. For that matter, I also like his Bach, also with feeling. :D

Feinberg's WTC's been in my basket for a long, long time now. I'll have to bite the bullet one of these days, but damn, it's a pricey one. :-\

Take your time and get to them all! I don't have them all -- 8 symphonies, I think. If it is included, I'd go to the Nielsen Variation next!

Thanks! This is the one in my (jpc) basket, which is more than double the price:

Are they the same recordings and if so, how do they compare? I see that jpc also has the one you've linked for a comparable price, which would save me a lot of paypal hassle.

They are the same recordings but how the transfers compare I don't know. Haven't read so far anyone complaining about Classical Records transfers so I'm considering getting that set myself, it's just much cheaper, partly due to the fact they opted for three cramped CDs instead of usual four.

If I get it will let you know, though that might take some time since I don't have paypal and jpc is charging arm and a leg for shipping to me.

It is a pity that van Nevel never worked for me, I really dislike his way of handling a Choir, and for that matter voices.
Otherwise this box would have been a great addition to my collection.

Erik (nephew of the latter, conductor of Currende) or Paul van Nevel (uncle of the former, conductor of the Huelgas Ensemble), or both, Harry:)

Nevel Marriner, probably.  ;)

This Dutch conductor should really be with one of the big European Orchestras, such is his insight and control.  He's never recorded with the BPO, VPO, nor any of the Staatskapelles as I understand.  I think he did do something with the Concertgebouw, but haven't clue what it was.  Everything I've heard by him adds to the quality of my listening experience.

This is the recording which illumined the Sinfonia antartica for me.
