Could you make a short list of what you think is most worth hearing? I'm very little familiar with it beyond Monteverdi.
If you give me some time; i will try. This needs thinking about.

Sure, take all the time you wish, I'm in no hurry. Didn't know there are that many choices. Two or perhaps three titles would be quite enough for start, I think.

Pretty damned gorgeous, compares favorable with their op 20 set.  Me happy camper!

The s...y site timed out while I were typing!

Short version:

Cavallis Amore e Daphne on K 617 and Statira on Opus 111 in addition to L'Ormindo which seems very fine on 2nd playing.
Caccinis Euridice (though strictly Florentine) on Ricercar to put Monteverdi in perspective.

And I'm waiting on Cesti's Dizgrazie d'Amore on Hyperion, but haven't heard it.

Great, thanks!

Then these two will be going on shopping list (waiting for offers), Statira seems out of print at the moment. I've noticed there are two or three Cavalli DVDs around, none of them caught your fancy?

Now playing CD4 from this set.  The performance by this regional German orchestra has been stellar ...

Istanbul w/ Jordi Savall & Pals!  Recommendation for me from Brian - first listen was w/ dinner so not paying full attention but really enjoyable - next listen will be more concentrated w/ the booklet!  My only 'minor' complaint is that Jordi's booklets are so LARGE (this one is nearly 200 pages) because of the many languages included, i.e. a single CD turns out to occupy 2-discs; a big deal for me w/ limited space - but great music making as usual from Jordi and his friends!   :D

McKinley, Clarinet Concerto No. 2.  An excellent neo-Classical piece.

No, I have some opera DVDs but not nearly enought. But this is exceptionally fine (though Roman):

Worth the price for the visual imagery alone, perhaps the best I've ever seen in baroque opera. And with people like Christie and Jarousky araound, the musical side is in the best of hands. 14 £ on mdt.co.uk currently.

Great choice to start off as well - for me already a legendary performance. :)

A random pick from Haydn's symphonies. :)

BEETHOVEN:        Sonata n. 8 opus 13

/ Friedrich Gulda
/ Rudolf Serkin (1962)
/ Wilhelm Backhaus

These are my three favorite versions. Serkin and Backhaus are very tense and dramatic, using fast tempos. But Backhaus goes too far and in some moments seems almost brutal.
Serkin has more eloquence and a better articulation.

But it is Gulda who I prefer. He too uses a fast tempo, but seems much more natural than Serkin or Backhaus. The Adagio, very pure, is wonderful. In general, this is the most beautiful and perfect of all the versions of the Pathetique I have heard.

A very fine disc of Gasparini cantatas on the Symphonia label. I found this by researching the fine Auser Musici ensemble which I became aware of through Cesti's Le Disgrazie d'Amore on Hyperion, and discovered this disc, currently on sale as well on several webshops. Like Puccini, he was from Lucca.

Listened to clips of Caccini on Ricercar site just now, liked it, ordered it. Who's gonna wait for sale, it's just a single disc.
One question. Does K617 Cavalli come with english translation of libretto? They can be unpredictable in that regard, some of their releases come with full translations, some with French only, some without any at all.

This CD came in this morning, and being curious I put it in my player right away. Well if you like the music by this composer, this disc is a must.
The AVIV Quartet clearly have a affinity beyond with Schulhoff, and this you clearly hear. It a excellent recording.

Have you heard the Moravec, val? That one is incredibly powerful in the first movement and gorgeous in the second. It's my favorite.
