Teresa, you should definitely hear some of the recordings which feature the reconstricted finale.
Not every one likes them, and some dismiss them altogether, but I think they're wrong, with all due respect.
So far,I've heard the Chandos recording of theWilliam Caragan version with Yoav Talmi and the Oslo Philharmonic and the one by two Italian musicologists with Inbal and the Frankfurt RSO on Teldec.
Curiously, the Inbal finale was not with the rest of the 9th but coupled with the 5th originally, and I don't know if it's still available, ditto the Chandos.
Others I have yet to hear are Daniel Harding with the Stockholm RSO(don't remember the label). Kurt Eichhorn and the Linz Bruckner orchestra on Camerata, and Johannes Wildner with the WEstphaplian Philharmonic on Naxos.
Having got to know the completions of the finale, I'm convinced that it resolves the terrible anguish and despair of the rest of the work and brings it to a truly joyous conclusion.
I see the program of the finale as Bruckner's triumphant entry into heaven after his colossal death struggle.
I'm no longer satisfied with only the first three movements and wish that more conductors would program the entire symphony live and record it.

Teresa

Superhorn thanks for the suggestions, I have only heard fragments of the fourth movement so far and it was on a separate disc.  I would like it complete of course after the rest of the of the symphony.

Bruckner: Symphony No. 9, 4th movement (fragment and John A Philips compilation)

....

Just least week I thought the event I most dread was about to happen: a piece by Dmitri Shostakovich I could enjoy listening to: his 2nd Symphony.

I am relieved to say the dread has not materialized, as Ives does what Shostakokovich tried to (re)do, so much better than Shostakovich ever could, or has.
I could scarcely disagree more.  >:( Ives should have stuck with selling insurance, (as eventually he did).

most opera is a waste of time.
And so is reading most of your posts.  :D

Well, you just read one.  :D  And I'm sure you'll read this one too.  ;)
Well, at least you have the common-sense to make them very short.  :)

...i don't like the classical era at all and avoid it & the poisonous classical composers, like a plague ... symphonies aren't my thing ... and most opera is a waste of time.
WOW I am in complete agreement with your post! ;D I prefer the Romantic era forward, Symphonic and Tone poems over Symphonies, though there are a few exceptions.

I love the orchestral excepts from many Operas but hate the actual operas themselves.  It's the style of singing I believe, to my ears opera singers sound like they are being tortured perhaps with bamboo under their fingernails?  The high sopranos sound like they are in the most pain.  At any rate, the sound of their pain is unbearable to my ears.  This does not mean I hate all "classical-type" singing, for example Carl Orff's Carmina Burana I hear none of the normal tell-tell signs of torture just beautiful singing, much of it whispered.  My favorite singing style is folk, such as Harry Belafonte and Burl Ives.   :)

Sounds as though it's time you took a beginners' course! or maybe it's just that you have an aversion to melodic development.

... Shoot me now!

Opera is an acquired taste, IMO.  I like opera myself, but only as "multimedia", i.e. not just the music & singing by itself but with good visuals, good acting, and yes!, subtitles so I can follow the plot.

There is no music I dislike.

Of course there is some I prefer over another, e.g. Stravinsky vs. Wagner; Mozart vs. Mahler; but there is no music that I actively "dislike" - even the music by Wagner and Mahler I like well enough to listen to it and enjoy it from time to time.

Things I dislike are selfish behavior, cruelty in any form, lack of empathy - those are the kinds of things I dislike; but music - hey, music is a little pussy cat.

That statement explains so much. James dislikes most music. Wow.

It sounds like you aren't listening to the right singers or performances.

I agree with Franco, there's no classical music which I really dislike. I also like all of the genres, eras and styles. I think if one comes to classical music with a closed (narrow) mind, one misses out on a whole lot. All of the greats (& even some of the also-rans) of classical have something to offer. One just has to be flexible. Usually, after listening to a new cd a few times, I begin to understand the music better & enjoy it. I also like to read online and in print about music. And of course, the best thing is going to see classical music done live. I bet that anyone who says they don't like a certain composer on record will love their music if they see it live. Recordings offer only 10% of the "real" experience.

  Classical music I dislike:

  1) Well my patience tends wear a little thin with Baroque operas (Yes Handel is a mighty fine opera composer but I can not remember the last time I heard Julius Cesar) (sigh)

Popular music (if it can be called music) I dislike ABHOR:

  1) Lounge music (you know that insignificant mellow trash they play in trendy, very expensive restaurants where reservations are required weeks in advance with a deposit, the meager food portions are not worth the price you pay for the plate, every waitress is a stuck up b*tch and the chef is an a*se) Does anybody here know what I am talking about??

I also don't like bad programming---monotonous and too long, wears the listeners out---that's bad!!! Shouldn't we (we=people who play there) kind of promote classical music, huh? And pretentious performance i don't like--usually from opera singers---and also a performance which haven't been prepared well is a turn off :( >:( ;) >:(
