Maiden listen to Schönberg with Verklärte Nacht.

What's that "arranged by Eduard Steuermann" bit? That's no way for a first listen to a landmark [eve of the] 20th-century work! ; )

I need to get to know that concerto better, Franco . . . .

It is a first rate work, and this recording is not half bad either - in fact, the entire 3-CD set is one of my better recent puchases.

That looks absolutely yummy, you have far to many nice recordings... ;D

One composer that is rising in my estimation, is represented on this disc, by a few fine works. I am impressed by the quality of the works, and the fine performance, not to mention the good recording which is in its own class too. Colorful music, written with great detail, and very picturesque. There is also Volume II to go, and I am sure I will enjoy it too.

Not a clue  ;D that's a download from emusic and that's scarce on info. To be honest, all the schönberg recent talk just got me curious and I searched emusic for samples. That's the only one there that was in chamber version, all the others were orchestral versions. I do not know which one was meant to be more original than the other   ;)

I think you would love this set, Harry. I really like that quasi-hypnotic and velvety tone of Enrico Gatti.  :)

What instruments was it arranged for?  It should either be for string sextet, or string orchestra.  I think I have a recording of an arrangement for string trio.

A CD that adds pleasure to my life and is in the same class of quality recordings Antoine always buys, made its entry some time ago in my collection, and I played it at least a dozen times. It is so well played and with so much love produced, that the outcome is magical, so I play it often.

Ah!  Well, Schoenberg wrote it for string sextet, and he also arranged it for string orchestra. I have no idea what this Steuermann arrangement is . . . .

Hmm, fascinating.  According to Wikipedia, Steuermann arranged  Verklärte Nacht for piano trio.

I have found this :

QuoteEtcetera KTC1272 : Prometheus Ensemble / Arnold Schoenberg / Verklarte Nacht op.4 (Schoenberg arr. Eduard Steuermann for violin viola violoncello and piano). Chamber Symphony No.1 op.9 (Schoenberg arr. Anton Webern for flute clarinet viola violoncello and piano). Chamber Symphony No.2 op.38b - version for two pianos (Schoenberg)

The plot thickens! So either Wikipedia needs to be corrected, or Steuermann also arranged it for piano quartet.

Franco

Nono: Prometeo

I like Luigi Nono's work in general, but this is one of his best, IMO.

The entry on the label website : http://www.etcetera-records.com/index.php?124

Looks like i have picked an odd one then  ;D

I might use one of my remaining emusic credit to get a string orchestra version in this case.

From this fabulous box CD 21.

Girolamo Frescobaldi.
Fiori Musicali Volume II.
Missa della Madonna. Missa cum jubilo and Vespers.

Performed by Canticum. A all male choir, Christoph Erkens.
Recorded in 1996.

Yet another success from this fine box.

Brian

I've been very much enjoying this one lately. I'd never heard the Copland concerto before, but both are fantastic - and so is David Singer, who's just plain awesome and has been for all his years at the first clarinet desk of the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra.

Henk

Disc 1.

Changing my listening habits. I want to listen longer to one composer, so listening to a whole cd instead of a couple of short works on a cd.

Franco

Piano Concerto No. 12 in A major, K. 414
Composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Performed by Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra
with Zoltan Kocsis
Conducted by Janos Rolla

Some new arrivals yesterday from the Czech Republic - safely packaged; Antoine recommendations:

Bach, JS - Goldberg Variations performed by Jaroslav Tuma - 2 discs; one on clavichords and the other on a harpsichord; information about the instruments and the liner notes by Tuma can be found on the Arta Website HERE -  listening to this set at the moment!

Bach, JS - WTC, Bks. I & II w/ Tuma on the harpsichord (on 4 discs) - coming up later -  :D

I hope you will enjoy those discs, Dave. Tonight, I will listen to those Goldbergs (on clavichord) and the Sinfonias and Inventions, also by Jaroslav Tůma.  :)
