A whole slew of Ms in the mail today: Mahler, Meier & Maazel; Martinu & Martinu; Mercury.

I now have Kubelik's first and last Má Vlasts--and thinking about buying one of the middle ones. I love overkill  ;D

Spatial distortion is a serious problem deteriorating headphone listening.
Crossfeeders reduce spatial distortion and make the sound more natural
and less tiresome in headphone listening.

The Vienna one kind of sucks (although half of the fault is with the orchestra), so avoid that one - it's one of those pointless recordings that I wish I didn't own :-\

Yeah, I've heard nothing but bad things about that version. Unbelievable how that conductor, that orchestra could screw up.

My apologies to the forum. I inadvertently posted the same message I'd posted several days ago. I merely meant to modify a picture (the Maazel Mahler) when I changed its location in my image website but instead I re-posted the entire message  ::) A senior moment. Sorry. I won't delete it though because there are already several replies to it.

Just ordered :):

You are in for a treat.  IMO, this is one of the timeless great recordings of these works with Trevor Pinnock and the English Concert at the peak of their performances ...

Cool 8) - I really enjoy Pinnock's Harpsichord Concertos and am planning to get his Brandenburg Concertos/Orchestral Suites in a couple of weeks. Also have Pinnock's Bach: Keyboard works, arriving in a few days too (I hope) :).

Actually yesterday's purchases and landed order:
--Kissim's new CD of Mozart Piano Concertos with Kremerata Baltica [am I right in thinking there's a connection there with Gidon Kremer?)
--Rubenstein's recording of the Rachmaninoff PC 2/ROATOP with Reiner and the CSO
--the first volume of Andras Schiff's Beethoven cycle (the Op. 2 and Op. 7 sonatas)
And of greatest interest, this $7.99 cheapie from Borders

A series of Baroque suites used as "Tafelmusik" in the court of Modena, last part of the 17th century.  Very nice music very well performed.

NB: if you go looking for this on Amazon, the composer's name is incorrectly listed as Valli, and the only artist listing is for the director/first violin of Semperconsort, Luigi Cozzolino.  In addition, Amazon currently lists the price as $22.49 (but you get it on Marketplace for less than $6)

BTW, that Andras Schiff Goldberg is available as a budget reissue on Universal Classics--that was the first recording of the Goldbergs I got (but far from the last).

Hi, Conor. Maybe in the future you could be interested in a 2-CD set on Virgin by Elizabeth Wallfisch and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. It includes not just excellent interpretations of the two violin concertos and the double concerto, but also the reconstruction of some violin concerti currently lost (based on the harpsichord concertos that we know, which are supposedly transcriptions of those lost violin concertos). You can get it on Amazon for $10.  :)

BTW, IMO one the best versions available of Bach's violin concertos is Kuijken/ La Petite Bande on DHM (with Lucy van Dael in the double concerto).

Hey Antoine, thanks very much for the recommendations - I was just reading earlier today about the lost Violin Concertos and didnt know that they have been re-constructed, I have added the Virgin disc to my wish-list! :).

I have been adding to my Bach colection the last couple of weeks and am currently getting HIP versions of some of his works - just placed an order for the following 2 discs:

The Kuijken/ La Petite Bande Violin Concertos look good too - these concertos are among my favourite works by Bach and I will also consider these if I get any additional versions in future :).

As someone who isn't really a huge fan of period instruments, I think these are exellent performances - crisp playing, good tempi, and an overall feeling of rightness in the music.  You can really hear a lot of detail in the music.  Hope you enjoy them!
Be kind to your fellow posters!!

Thanks ukrneal - I have been considering this set for the last few weeks and am really looking forward to listening to it already :).

Look what the FedEx man dragged in:

Picked up a larger than usual order today, with three main centers of gravity:
Zinman's Mahler cycle:  Symphonies 2 and 8 (Zinman/Tonhalle Zurich)
Brahms on Virgin:  Piano Concerto 1 (Angelich/Jarvi/Frankfurt RSO)
Piano Quintet with Schumann's Piano Quintet (Artemis Quartet with Andsnes)
VIvaldi on Naive:  Concerto per oboe (Bernardini/Zefiro) [Vivaldi Edition]
Concerto per fagotto e oboe (Azzolini/Westermann/Sonatori de la
                                     Gioiosa   Marca) [Vivaldi Edition]
                            Concerti e cantate (Mingardo/Concerto Italiano/Alessandrini)
                                      [not Vivaldi Edition]
                            Concertos (Europa Galante/Biondi)
[not Vivaldi Edition] 2 CD set in special format (see below)
And two (for this batch) outliers
Beethoven:  Piano Sonatas, Vol II (Opp. 10 and 13) (Andras Schiff)
Onslow (also Naive):  String Quartets 28-30 (Opp. 54-56) (Quatour Diotima)

The Onslow is to be totally blamed on GMG.   The two Mahlers mean I am, momentarily, up to date with Zinman's cycle (I believe the Ninth is to be released next month).  The Brahms concerto will match the Second I already have.  The Schiff is the next to the last installment I need to complete his Beethoven cycle, and the last installment is on its way to me: so that part of my fill-the-gaps program is near completion.

The Europa Galante (which I thought was simply a single regular CD) is being issued by Naive) is part of a fifteen volume set of reissues--basically, double CDs with liner notes and track listing in larger print set into a foldout cardboard box  130mm x 230 mm (approx. 5 1/4 inches by 9 1/4 inches), with music ranging from the Troubadors and Trouveres to Boulez and Xenakis, and going by the one I got, priced as a regular single CD.   The series is called  Les Grands Millesimes de Naive Classique, and the performances are apparently supposed to be those that garnered above average praise and awards.  Some of the entries in the series that link to current threads on GMG include Chopin's Preludes, Etudes and Sonata No. 2 played by Grigory Sokolov,  Bach Concertos and Goldberg Variations featuring Pierre Hantai,  chamber music by Roussel with concertos by Hahn, featuring Tharaud and Queyras,  and Boccherini Piano Quintets featuring Quatour Mosaiques.  I haven't gone looking, but presumably you can find more info if interested at Naive's website.

Some Steve Reich that I didn't own on the way...

I've been collecting Steve Reich's music off and on for about 6 years. Interestingly enough, he was one of the first contemporary classical composers that made me sit up and take notice. I've had periods where I absolutely hated his music while at other times I was in love with it. My impressions today are positive as I have come to accept his music on its own terms. For me, he was always more more interesting than Glass whose music does little for me.

I found this in my mailbox today, meaning I'm one step closer to completing the Lloyd symphony cycle:

You'll love em! I have the box set, which is regular CDs I think, but the Norwegian and Symphonic Dances CD is great, and the Holberg Suite is really well-played.

Brian,  I remember you recommended that redbook CD set a while back.  Since I already have 3 of the disks on SACD, it makes more sense for me to buy the rest in SACD instead of the redbook set to avoid the duplicates and to get better sound.  But BIS redbook CD's generally sound great anyway.

So, the clock is ticking for your trip to the other side of the pond ...     ;)

I don't think BIS uses DSD masters for their SACDs, so their SACDs would benefit from surround sound but not ultra-high resolution audio.
