Helsinki. Bournemouth is getting darned hard to find.

Yes, that EMI big box is getting quite difficult to find for sure ...

The Takemitsu Naxos disc is pretty good - I got it about 2 years ago & am still only midway into understanding his music. What is amazing is that virtually all of the pieces on that disc have a uniformity of style and expression, even though they were composed decades apart (from the 1950's to the '90's). The exception is the suite of film music for string orchestra, which is in a totally different sound world from the other more fragmented pieces. I think that he was quite an interesting composer - he was a subtle colourist up there with the best in the game, from Debussy, to Webern and Feldman...

Yes, I look forward to hearing more from this composer. I heard A Flock Descends Into A Pentagonal Garden and was hooked from that moment forward, but I heard this work a year or so ago and had almost completely forgotten about this composer, but then I ran across his name again, and it brought back that memory of hearing his music. Fascinating composer no doubt about it.

Sid, you will also be interested to know that I bought another Varese recording with Boulez on DG. Have you heard this one:

Sid

@ MI: Haven't heard that Varese disc but I know that Boulez is highly regarded in post 1945 repertoire (& not only his own music, of course!). It should be top-notch...

Yes, I wanted a revised version of Ameriques, because the Chailly version I own is the original version, so I'm interested to hear what changes were made between the original and the revised versions.

More on the way...

I have the middle two discs, which happen to be some of my favorite Takemitsu.
If I had to choose a favorite piece of his, it would probably be "How Slow the Wind."

Man, if PDQ Bach were still active . . . I could imagine How Breaks the Wind . . . .

It breaks for thee.

Well, I'm confident that no one will top me as I report what I landed yesterday.  No less than 172 CDs of music by JS Bach.

This is not the Brilliant Classics version, but the "Bachakademie" edition from Hanssler.  I think the discs in this set are generally available for nominally full price, but the complete set has been long out of print and typically goes for nearly $2000 if you can find it.  But amid little fanfare, Hanssler issued a "10th anniversary" edition for roughly $1.50 per disc.  I wanted the Cantatas, and I like what I have heard of Hanssler's recordings of the keyboard music, organ music and chamber music, so I figured this would be the time to spring for it.  In the US www.cduniverse.com seems to have the best deal.  Mdt also has it for cheap, but shipping to the US and uncertainty over possible tariffs on an item this expensive make it a less attractive alternative.

Sweet! (Two booklets and a CD-ROM, eh?)

My haul is as boring as Scarpia's is exciting.

And I bought each of these used for £0.01 from Amazon marketplace seller zoverstocks:

Not bad for 5 pence, I should think. :)

Awesome find Scarpia!  Looks like it has been reissued at $300 just a few weeks ago.  Oh I'm very tempted.

A fairly thick booklet is needed just to list the tracks, and another to cross reference by BWV number.  The cd rom contains the sung texts, and other information.  I'll have to work out how I'll have the texts in front of my while listening (probably using a notebook computer).

Huzzah! It's landed, after all.
