I suppose the main attraction here is Christine Schornsheim playing fortepiano. :)

Not really. These transcriptions are preferently violin pieces with piano accompaniment. Therefore, the lights are upon Hirasaki Mayumi (BTW, I prefer the Japanese order: surname, first name  :)).

Interesting to know what kind of period instrument Mayumi uses.

Violine von Straub, Röthenbach (um 1800)
Romantischer Bogen von Luis Emilio Rodriguez

C. Schornsheim: Romantischer Pleyel-Flügel (1848)

:)

There's also an excellent ASV disc of Choros 1-7.

Yes, I have that single disc and a good one - of course, does not include all of these works; so I just put in an order for the BIS box recommended by MI:D

CD3: Hob. III:81, 82 & 83

A real joy from the mocking beginning of the string quartet op. 77/1 to the last note.  :)

not something I can listen to often, but one of my favorite peces of music.

No, I don't need to hear it all the time, but once or twice a month is okay with me. ;)

An outstanding recording in every way. Petrenko is on fire and his Liverpool forces play with guts and passion.

Listening to Symphony No. 4 right now. This is a fantastic and very generous box set from BIS (15-CDs). It contains all of the symphonies (w/ Vanska/Lahti Symphony Orch.), most of the tone poems (Vanska and Jarvi sharing conducting duties), all of the works for violin w/ orchestra, some of the incidental music, choral works, and chamber works.

Since I'm a big collector of Sibelius and seeing as BIS recordings are so expensive these days, I wanted a way to get a big chunk of BIS's Sibelius cycle without paying their hefty price and so I stumbled upon this box and was thrilled with its content: http://www.bis.se/index.php?aID=BIS-CD-1697-1700&op=album

Hi Stuart - I own both the Watchorn WTC volumes and enjoy - I've exchanged a few e-mails w/ him; he is quite responsive and I've been very impressed w/ his scholarship (on a many of topics) and his quick willingness to respond to us music lovers - has added to my purchases a number of CDs from his site - Dave  :D

Dave,  My WTC 1 is still in transit along with the EMI Vaughan Williams mega set.  BTW, I found the pedal harpsichord to have a fuller and richer sound than the regular harpsichord.  Is that your impression as well?  I spent a fair amount of time looking up Peter Watchorn on the internet before I decided to buy these CD's ...

Stuart - if not already done, check out my thread on Old Musical Instruments HERE - plenty of discussion on different 'old' instruments including the pedal harpsichord, much of which was stimulated by the Watchorn recordings - really a 'combo' of two instruments - just fascinating!   :D

Hamelin plays this music like he was born to play it. Such clarity and sense of swing. This one gets high marks all around. Haven't listened to Bolcom's Piano Concerto but it's up next.

Dave,  Thanks for the link.  The pedal is a whole lot more sophisticated than I had in mind ...   ;D

The cover of Edward Hopper's "Nighthawks" is enough to provoke interest in the disk. One of my favorite paintings. :)

Never really listened to this symphony before, but the opening couple of minutes was quiet something.  It appears that Sibelius is growing on me. :)
