Splendid!

Volume XI, of a composer that I admire very much.
Works for Violin and Piano.

Amazing music, very melodious, attractively played, almost ecstatic without going over the top. The recording is state of the art.

A most melodic reading, not as thundery as many, perhaps trying to catch a poetic essence in some of the malestrom, but thundery enough!
On another note, I have ordered George Chadwick too.

I had considerable problems with the diffuse sound, and missing therefore a lot of details in the orchestral palette.

That's pure pleasure listening

Absolutely. One of the many undeservedly neglected Romantic composers.

The sound isn't great, but I value this for Järvi's direction - as much as I like, say, Kubelik and Harnoncourt, I find them too tense at times, as if somehow overcharging the music unnaturally.

Sallinen, symphony No 5.

I liked No 3 in my first listen to this disc, also like No 5, but the work is perhaps not as concentrated.  The outer movements are referred to as "mosaics," meaning they are composed of fragments.  The three intermezzi (particularly the central one) were the most attractive parts during my initial listen.  The outer movements a bit more thorny, and may require a bit more exposure to absorb.

When I had the same complaint about a recording by the same record company of the same conductor and the same orchestra in the same hall, you told me to get a new stereo system.   ::)

Yes Jarvi's 'directing is straightforward without nonsense..Kubelik is still my favourite, but at the absolute top for me is the complete set conducted by Otmar Suitner, never did I hear so much detail, in fact no matter how dense the score gets, thanks to applying the right dynamics you still hear all!

Then I apologize for it, and will rephrase my remarks, I have played this on many different Stereo sets, and every time I heard more, and the sound became better. After having this played on a set costing nearly 80.000 dollars, my conclusion would be now, buy better recordings. For these Chandos recordings are not good. Sp please accept my humble apologies. :-[

4000 pages of listening!  I wonder how many hours that is we've all been craning towards the radiogram with our eartrumpets.

I see.  ;D

I found your response to my criticism of the audio in Jarvi's recording of the Prokofiev symphonies:

QuoteIn my opinion, when I play Jarvi's Chandos recordings with the Prokofiev's symphonies, the sound of the eighties is top of the bill, a open lucid, sound picture, with a enormous front to back image, in which every detail how small can be heard. If it sounds less than that on your equipment, call your local hifi dealer, I am sure he can fix the problem if you want to invest. This is based on personal experience, hearing these recordings on many different hifi sets.

In any case, I think the technical quality of the recordings is very good.  For me it is a matter of recording perspective, and I prefer something more immediate with less reverberation (although the more reverberabt recordings can make a better impression when listening on headphones).
