That Schumann looks enticing. I have heard Zacharias with the Cherubini Quartet on EMI, but MDG has some of the finest recording standards I've encountered in a label, and surely this will be equal or superior.

I totally agree, Lethe. I have the Leipzigers playing Schubert (MDG, too) and it's my favorite complete cycle.

This one is absolutely superb: I think it's my favorite out of all the Belohlavek recordings I own.

This is good to know, Edward! I love Martinu, especially when conducted by Jiri Belohlavek. He has such an affinity for this music.

Wonderful recordings.  I assume that set has a minimal booklet.  I'd advise you to go to the Hyperion web site and download that booklets for the individual issues that make up the set.  Hewitt provides her own analysis of each work she performs, and her comments are quite interesting.

I've heard most of her recordings of Bach via library check-outs, and I have noticed all her write ups on the music.  I only currently have the 30th Anniversary Hyperion Hewitt Goldberg Variations, and I find it absolutely mesmerizing, beautiful music, and when I listen to it I really get swept away by music.  I could listen to that disc daily if I didn't have good self-control.  :D  The WTC included in this box set is her 2008 recording of it.

James MacMillan (born 1959):

Just bought some recordings by this remarkable Scottish composer and thanks to YouTube and Naxos Music Library I sampled a lot of his music, so the recordings that are on the way...

I'm also considering MacMillan's own recording on RCA of Seven Last Words. I think I'll go ahead and buy it.

Two very interesting releases from Chandos.

Arrived today, the Op 2 sonatas were just as good as I remembered them from the LP I owned and which prompted me to buy this set. There is something about his Beethoven playing that I can't describe that really appeals to me but I'm going to attempt to describe it anyway.

My recollection is of the feeling I had when I first heard Richter's LvB yet they are totally different players. My first listen to Richter and I went WOW - I want to hear more. I feel the same way about this. There is a joie de vivre in this first CD that makes me like it immediately. The playing is unfussy, very direct, with a hint of strong left hand but not dark in any way. I have a lot of LvB sonata recordings yet I can't make a direct comparison with any other pianist in stylistic or interpretative terms.

As I listen to more of this set I'll report back but based on one CD alone it's already a good investment.
Cheers

Woo hoo! I hadn't realized that the third Halvorsen was coming out already. I am still behind with the series, but I do like his stage music, so it's just a matter of time before I catch up.

That Rufinatscha looks mighty tempting every time someone posts it!
