Pulled the trigger on these two Stravinsky/Ashkenazy recordings (out-of-print of course):

It's not like I need anymore Stravinsky, but I've been wanting these two recordings for quite some time.

Ashkenazy I think is still somewhat underrated as a conductor. He's certainly a capable conductor and really strives for the best in his performances.

Yes, I certainly agree, Ashkenazy is a very brilliant conductor, I particularly appreciate his recordings of the orchestral works by Rachmaninov, Shostakovich, Scriabin, Prokofiev and Sibelius.
I've always read excellent rewies about his performances, why do you think he's rather underrated as a conductor?

He's excellent in Rachmaninov, Shostakovich, Prokofiev, and Sibelius. I find Muti preferable though in Scriabin, but that's just my own opinion. I think he's underrated because he hardly gets much press like say Abbado or even the younger Petrenko, but I think Ashkenazy's accomplishments speak for themselves, don't you?

Let me know what this one is like, John! Still addicted to the most recent Rattle recording, absolutely amazing performance.

Will do, Daniel. I read many reviews that stated Maazel's L'Enfant et les sortileges was the best put to record. We shall see. The audio samples sounded fantastic of what little I heard.

Renfield

£5, Brian and Daniel! ;)

Really? I never knew that Maazel was praised for impressionist music! Look forward to hearing what you think! :)

He's not, but he has been able to get outside his comfort zone on occasion and make heads spin.

I just realized that I don't think I own a single Maazel recording. Is that bad?  ;D

I'm on the side of Petrenko as well, this version of Shostakovich No.10 is absolutely outstanding.
