I just realized that I don't think I own a single Maazel recording. Is that bad?  ;D

Yes, it's bad, very bad. You need, at a minimum, his Vienna Sibelius 1, 4 and Tapiola; his Prokofiev Romeo and Juliet; his Ravel operas; his Mahler 4 with Battle; his Zemlinsky Lyric Symphony; his Berlin Bruckner 8; and his Berlin Beethoven 5 and 6.

Mahler, you ought to go see it.

I'm very curious for your thoughts on these two, the latter in particular.

I feel about an inch tall.  :-[

I like the sound of Mahler 4 with Battle, and I have always heard good comments on his Sibelius.
Well, those are all great pieces so I feel I couldn't go wrong. Thanks, Sarge!

No need to feel that way. I wasn't being entirely serious. I forgot to put the smiley after my first sentence. I do think very highly of those recordings though.

Many of Maazel's recordings are interesting, and some are extremely impressive (like that infamous 'liquid nitrogen' Sibelius 4).

But that Mahler 4th is absolutely in a class of its own. Nearly the most perfect Mahler recording I've ever heard, all in all.

So yes, do invest! :)

The Kanka-Klansky I knew before buying because I made an mp3 rip of a copy from my local library a couple of years ago. They're warm, romantic performances that I can enjoy greatly. If you like your Brahms hefty, it probably won't blow you out of the water though.

Another recording by this duo that I really like is this one: [asin]B0014SM960[/asin]

The Isserlis recording I still have to listen to.

For a second I thought I was in the opening of Full Metal Jacket. Maybe it's the avatar.  ;D
I knew you weren't serious. But I'll check some of those discs, you've never left me astray on recommendations.

Just bought some Weinberg who is a composer completely new to me, but I've read about for years:

Thanks Bulldog and Brian for the suggestions. 8)

Motivated by the imminent High Holy Days,  I ordered these CDs last night from various Amazon Marketplace vendors.  Given the price differential, I went with used CDs on some of these, which means that for one of them the s&h was more than the price of the CD.

The two small images are of a pair of recordings made by New York Baroque, of which apparently another issue (or at least different cover art) is also available.

In today's mail: Johann Hermann Schein (1586-1630), Mendelssohn, and Busoni (a purchase inspired by the Thielemann Kicks Audience Ass thread):

What a fantastic series of images. What music could live up to the visual impact of those CD covers, I wonder?

How much Weinberg's music! I would need to get to know it better, but both Symphony No.1 and No.2 are very good.

Glad you enjoyed what you've heard thus far, Ilaria. Weinberg has been a composer that has flown under my radar for far too long. Glad I finally took the plunge.

You're lucky, I've never found Weinberg's CDs till now; but fortunately there are some videos of his music on Youtube.....

You can find them, especially the ones I ordered, all day long online. Do shop online at all?
