I have this - I love it. And a beautiful cover too.
I remember hearing good things about the recording, so I had to pick it up.  Having a quintet that has the Double Bass didn't hurt :D

I am aware of that John! ;)

Don't worry, will buy it soon. Have to buy a new set of headphones first though... I broke my last ones while conducting Mahler in front of the mirror... ;)
That can be fun too. Which headphones are you looking at?

The ones I used to have, and would be perfectly happy with again are the "Sennheiser PX 200". Although, might go for the PX 100, which surely would be fine as well... plus it saves me £10 which I could spend on another Mahler cd :)

For that level of quality the PX100 are pretty good (I use them at work, but have never tried the PX 200). Koss also do some good ones at that entry level.

I do wonder however, if you wouldn't be happier with the Haydn trios by the Van Swieten Trio (Van Oort et al.)?

Q

This looks like an amazing bargain - period practice and all; is it as good as it looks, Q?

I'm not Q, Alan, but I say it's mighty good.

Que is vacationing or something, and won't be back for a few more days, but Gurn says when it comes to Haydn's violin sonatas with cello obbligato, it's da bomb (for the time being).

Gentlemen, I thank you both. Or the three of you. Or four (depending on whether we count the presently absent Gurn and Que, as I think we should).

I'm going to cast caution to the wind and get one on this basis. Please send food parcels.

Karl Henning

You just try not counting Gurn, fella.

Yes, I completely agree. Absolutely great set, which I would happily call my favourite for the trilogy. The orchestra may not be completely up to the highest standard - however, these performances contain so much thrill, power and energy! Far more than the Pappano, for example, which just seems too "neat" for this music...

I like it a lot, and someone the other day (Antoine? Que?) said they felt it was the best 'bang for the buck' box that Brilliant has ever produced. I don't know, I haven't heard them all...  :D

Thankfully I did, Karl. And I have an abacus to prove it.

That's good enough for me. As we speak, I suppose the busy Amazonians are scurrying about packing one up to send me.

Very excellent recordings.  Found it in a used shop.

I only realised later that what you consider as 'da bomb' is probably the set of Trio 1790 discs. :) Is that one complete?
