What is your favourite Nielsen symphony, currently?

No.1
No.2 "The Four Temperaments"
No.3 "Sinfonia Espansiva"
No.4 "The Inextinguishable"
No.5
No.6 "Sinfonia Semplice"
I can't choose

I'm quite curious to see the results :)

I really love all Nielsen symphonies, but maybe my favourite one is No.4 "The Inextinguishable".

I love them all, too. But I have a weak spot for No. 2. A wonderfully rich and varied piece.

Thanks for voting Johan :)

Agreed, No.2 is really beautiful, a very powerful and expressive work; I particularly appreciate the first and the third movement, they sound to have reminiscence of Mahler's music.

I don't know but would love to find out. I mean, I own a set of these symphonies but there's so much other music that distracts me...

I think the second movement is one of the most poignant evocations of a lazy summer day in music.

Which recording? Try one...

The 5th is my favorite, but when I listen I usually just listen to all of the symphonies at once so it becomes like a big, complete work in my head! :D

DRSO/Blomstedt, that three-fer from EMI.

Oh, and of course whatever's on Spotify.

The 5th and it seems like it will always remain the 5th even after not listening to it for many months and listening to the other five. I don't know I'm just hooked on it. I blame Bernstein for this! ;) :D

The new erato

2 is wonderful. So is 3, and 5, but I voted for no 4.

Sinfonia espansiva...all it took was a snippet, about 90 seconds worth of the first movement, heard at age 18 on a Columbia sampler LP, to hook me for life.

Mahler, you ought to go see it.
he was as f*cked-up as you are."

The Bernstein version of this was what hooked me on Nielsen, in 73 or 74. Still I voted for no 4.

I voted for Espansiva. The beginning of vocalise is for me the most beautiful moment of my San Francisco Blomstedt set. This is the reason. It will be much harder to decide which symphony is most appreciated by me.

As a matter of fact Bernstein's recording is very remarkable, althought my favourite version remains the Blomstedt.

I picked "I can't choose" because I'm honest, dammit. :)

The same with me around the same time. While I still consider Bernsteins version remarcable, I prefer to day Schönwandt and Blomstedt.

I can not make up my mind whether I shall vote for no. 4 or no.5, so my vote must be something like 4,5 = four and a half.

I don't love them, I merely like them all very much.

I do that, too.

I can choose quite easily, always liked the 4th.
