I love his Tchaikovsky, Mussorgsky, Scriabin, Rachmaninoff.

Same for me, plus his Liszt and Glazunov. Which gives me good reason to stay the hell away from his Mozart ;D

My favourite recording of the Mozart Requiem- arranged for string quartet:

Anybody else like Boston Baroque in the K.626? Just wonderin' . . . .

Wanting another recording of Nielsen 5. Was wondering about these two:

[asin]B0027DQHGY[/asin]

Think I may be entering a Nielsen phase.... so also may be considering these. Any opinions?

The new erato

I haven't heard the Davis, but would go for the idiomatic and splendid Schønwandt.

Can't see what that one is. And I don't know what you currently own, but of my eight complete Nielsen cycles, my favorites are Bernstein/Ormandy, Rozhdestvensky (broadly paced, and impressive) and, perhaps my desert island pick, Kuchar on Brilliant. For only 8.99 at Amazon UK, a bargain, and definitely worth owning. The performances are remarkable for the detail, especially the brass detail.

"Theodore Kuchar leads what is without question the most exciting complete Nielsen symphony cycle available, making this the set to get for Nielsen newcomers. He doesn't put a foot wrong in any of these symphonies, and it's rather amazing to hear how well he handles passages where so many conductors come to grief." --ClassicsToday

He meant this one, I think:

Which is a nice one!

Thank you for your feedback. Shall purchase the Schønwandt 5th, Dausgaard disc and the Kuchar set on your recommendations.

Sarge, I only own two complete cycles at the moment which are the Blomstedt Decca and EMI. Difficult for me to choose a favourite between those two, both so wonderful! I look forward to hearing the Kuchar.

For the Davis, will wait until the whole cycle is released.

It is indeed. I too recommend it.

I wasn't impressed with Davis's 4th or 5th. I thought they were underpowered and the music just didn't have that drive that a work like the 5th needs. I'm still a sucker for Bernstein's 5th, which gets my vote for best performance.

I do - although I don't much care for the reconstructed score they used (however good it is to have it as an alternative option). That was one of my very first Mozart Requiems, btw; Telarc used to release very good stuff back then.

Thanks for the feedback, John. I have heard a lot of mixed reviews about the Davis cycle so far.

Yeah, I don't know what it is, but I've just never been too impressed with Colin Davis anyway. He just never gives a lot of the music he conducts the kind of rhythmic drive it needs, but his Berlioz and Sibelius, are excellent.

I just listened to my Markevitch recording of Berlioz' Damnation de Faust:

I love this recording, but the transfer is not very good, with some distortions, especially on disk 1. I wonder, is it worth acquiring another re-mastering:

Does anyone have this one?

Yes, 4 & 5 were somewhat muted performances. But the 6th from 1 & 6 is good.

Thanks for the feedback, Jens. Have you listened to the 1st from that new release as well? It is not available here in England for a while...

Yes... I didn't find it wanting, either, but it was the 6th that particularly impressed me. Not in a comparative way, which I didn't bother with... but certainly on its own!

Hey ALL - I've been considering obtaining a 'Complete Chopin' box and have been considering the ones below - the Ohlsson has gotten great reviews, of course on a modern piano; the other w/ multiple performers on  period instruments - would love the latter; now I already own most of these works by various performers on modern instruments.

I love period pianos so the 'Real Chopin' is my main interest at the moment - NOW, I'm getting a $50 Amazon gift certificate and these are now about the same price from Amazon - so WHAT one should I buy?  Has anyone heard both of these boxes to provide some comparisons?   All comments will be appreciated - thanks; Dave ;)

This will cost you only $51-52 if you buy this at the Abeille sale (I checked the cost of just the one item with shipping for one item). This includes shipping of EUR8.28) And you can buy two more items for shipping at this price (if you can find something). Just an FYI if you want to get both or want to get this one more cheaply and use the Amazon certificate on something else.
Be kind to your fellow posters!!
