Each opera by Handel has it's own character, I love them, the oppressed hearts and the release of tension again. The Roman way of feeling, of civilization.
Except that this pretty certainly isn't by Handel.

First disc from

Played it to my dad to try and introduce him to more impressionist music, which he was not the greatest fan of. However, he really enjoyed all the pieces I played him today. :)

Shall move on to the second disc tommorow... ;)

That is a great Kuerti-Schubert, isn´t it ? Lots of details in the Wanderer often overheard ...

An arresting Sonata performance too (listening to the difference in tone between left- and right-hand lines), and it's a mono pressing that sounds great (I checked the matrix numbers to make sure).

Some R&J chatting in Prokofiev's thread had me whistling some of these melodies, thought I would accompany those whistles with some actual listening.

Alkan is indeed an extraordinary composer. I second the Lewenthal suggestion and offer three more recommendations:

For more info, he has his own thread and everything.

Harry, I was going to comment before but assumed you had the whole Chandos Grainger series and were familiar with the work. The Warriors could be said to be Grainger's magnum opus (it certainly is his most ambitious project). I think you'll love it: big orchestra, lots of percussion and 3 pianos! What he had in mind to depict is vividly reflected in its, let's say, randy (as in orgiastic) atmosphere.  8)
