I prefer Josef Páleníček  in Janacek. Firkusny is cheap and easily available and some people like it.

Postnikova has made an interesting recording of the Piano Sonata (Erato). She gives it more weight than others, the finale becoming a true elegy and the whole piece lasting 16 minutes.

Andsnes has also made a good Janacek recording (virgin).

An old classic too is Bernathova (supraphon + various licensed issues).

Ulla Erml on the Paula label is very colourless if compared to others.

Not one of the piano experts here nor really familiar w/ this composer's compositions for the instrument regarding comparisons, but own the 2-disc set above w/ Håkon Austbø on the Brilliant label for almost a 'give away' price - now I do have this pianist in others' works and enjoy his playing and interpretations - good luck in your selection - :)

I don't know the contents of the Newton box. I have this one, and it has a top rating in my personal data base:

Here is some info on the album above: http://www.arkivmusic.com/classical/album.jsp?album_id=7762

I remember Palenicek only vaguely, but it is a very positive memory.

I know the Austbö set also, it is good, but I think I prefer Firkusny.

I'm afraid this won't need much consideration:

For someone that doesn't own most of the recordings, it's a solid deal, but I own probably 95% of that box set, so I don't need it.

Folks actually considering this should be aware that, first, Sony is issuing its own similar boxset, and second that both the DG and Sony sets are on sale at MDT (and possibly other places, but MDT is the only place I've looked yet),

Opinions differ...

"I don't get it. You can get, from the same company (X5), the very good "100 Supreme Classical Masterpieces" series for all these composers (Vivaldi, Debussy, Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Mozart), for between $2 to $4, with better artists, and complete works. And then they drop this poop bomb on their potential customers. I would be ticked if I bought this and later on saw that I could have gotten A LOT more (volume and quality) for a lot less money. "

Please read the rest of the guys "recommendations". That guy is a jerk; big time, and the quote isn't even relevant for the set (the same text is posted for several other sets). The guy is probably a X5 marketeer.

Don't worry, I posted that for the joke it undoubtedly is. Why get an all-and-only Debussy box when the "100 Supreme Classical Masterpieces" super-set is a few clicks away from one's living room?  :D

Arkivmusic has this as one of its Weekend Specials right now for $17.99, if you're ready to get it now.  (But the price is only good through midnight Sunday 3/11 EDT.)

Thanks, Dave, but I'm kind of waiting around to see what it'll go for in the Amazon MP. Perhaps I can get it a bit cheaper there.

I might do that too - although I am so excited about getting it that I might even have to pre-order it...

Will have to think hard about this!

Unqualified 'yes' to this, which is an excellent 3-hours-or-so summary of Sciarrino's orchestral career. I'm probably biased a little because the collection includes the wonderful not-really-a-piano-concerto Recitativo oscuro, which (with Florent Boffard as soloist and Pierre Boulez conducting the LSO) was the first work by this composer I'd ever heard--and was one of comparatively few new discoveries to completely blow me away on the spot.

Most of the rest of the discs are ones I don't have either--the Rihm though is mostly rather early music and I don't necessarily think a recording I'd rank particularly high on the Rihm priority list. I'm sure I'd have more of them if I had the amount of free time for music that I had back when Kairos first appeared and I pretty much bought everything from them on sight.
"I don't at all mind actively disliking a piece of contemporary music, but in order to feel happy about it I must consciously understand why I dislike it. Otherwise it remains in my mind as unfinished business."

Considering a fifth Ring cycle. I'm thinking about this one...

[asin]B006XOBFJC[/asin]

It also looks like the classic Bohm cycle is being reissued on Decca with their first release being Gotterdammerung. Hopefully, the rest of the cycle will follow. If it looks like they'll be released this could be my sixth cycle, but I could always go for the budget Bohm box. 8)
