Excellent, Sadko. I hope you enjoy it! I know I have. Do you own any of the other Prokofiev/Jurowski CPO recordings?

I liked the test bits, and I also have a vague good memory of having heard it on the radio, so I'm looking forward to it.

No, I'm not even aware of any other recordings, you know them? Can you recommend them?

Yes, I whole-heartedly recommend all of the Michail Jurowski Prokofiev CPO recordings. All of the performances are excellent.

Just landed:

I've had that Schumann set for a few years and find it very rewarding (except for Kinderszenen).  Fou Ts'ong uses much rubato and packs quite a punch.  Works well when the Florestan/Eusebius dynamic is prevalent.

Acquired with a gift card through Amazon:

Bach's French Suites - Watchorn/Musica Omnia
Schubert's Die Winterreise - Gura/Berner/Harmonia Mundi

The Schubert is my first lieder purchase in over 10 years.

QuoteGot a whole lot of stuff through Amazon Market place (First Time I bought more than 2 things from individual sellers, so I am nervous....Though, I've never had poor experiences with them)

Landed Today.  Getting a bit nervous (I don't know why) about the Schnittke Choir Concerto.  Hopefully, it comes tomorrow, or soon thereafter.

This might come as a shock to some of you, but during the past week I have embarked on the painstaking task of buying my first ever Haydn string quartet recording. Not an easy task I assure you.  Through spotify, friends, youtube etc.etc. I was able to sample many recordings.  A few stood out, the Mosaiques (incomplete), the Aeolian and surprising the Angeles sets! The Mosaiques is "incomplete" which I felt did not really justify the prices it was going for.  I found the Aeolian (the cheapest of the bunch) a bit too bright for continued sustained listening. I was drawn to the "sweetness" in tone of the Angeles set. Complaints of sound "reverberations" and "echos" and stereo imaging "issues" from some amazon.com respondents were hardly relevant.

HMV had a few of the Angeles sets on sale at £50 and with my HMV points I was able to get it for £45!  So there you have it, I am now the proud owner of this:

I have one of the disks in that Gliere box, Paul, and it is excellent. That set should be very fine, something for me to look into. :)

Which CD do you have?

I am not overly familiar with Gliere's music, apart from the Four pieces for Double Bass, and the (school arrangement) of the Russian Sailor's Dance.  So, it will be interesting experience :)

The one with the Bronze Horseman Suite and the Horn Concerto;

I'm guessing it is in that box, anyway, it looks like the same series. I like Rimsky-Korsakov, Taneyev, Ippolitov-Ivanov, that sort of music, and this fits in there very nicely indeed!

Quote from: karlhenning on March 20, 2012, 04:14:15 AMHmm, that Dennis Russell Davies disc looks tempting, Sarge.
An Amazon reviewer has made a good case (or at least a case that I agree with) that the 9th has not yet been recorded with near-correct tempos.

You might want to also get Tippett's own recording of ACOUT, which can be had on Naxos.  It's my only recording of the work, so I can't directly compare it, but I found it a first rate performance.

Thread duty:
landed today: CPO recordings of CPE Bach's Israelites in the Wilderness and Italian Oboe Concertos with Diego Dino Ciacci, and the third CD of Alan Curtis performing JSB's English and French Suites, which had been on back order (the others were ordered at the same time, but already shipped to me).  Since I already have reported the orders on GMG, I won't bother you with images.

I've heard it before, but I do not own a recording of it. I'll probably go ahead and pull the trigger on since it's so cheap and, yes, a first-rate performance. Thanks for reminding me. :)
