As the title says, for a given maiden composer, what would be your recommended recording as an entry point please ?

A couple of guidelines :
- strictly one recording only
- not OOP
- boxset possible provided it remains an introductory budget choice
- full work(s) only
- type of the work is up you

A few names off my exploration list to get things started  0:) Feel Free to add your request  :)

Ives. When the Moon. Richard Bernas, London Projects.

Piazzolla & his Quintet: Tango: Zero Hour

BIG seconds on these recommendations.

For Britten I'd say...

[asin]B000002SS5[/asin]

...has three of his most well-known pieces with good performances.

Amplyifying on Britten and Ligeti:
I'd suggest the Rattle/Britten box on EMI (which includes Ian Bostridge in a very fine performance of Illuminations, Nocturne and Serenade for Tenor Horn and Strings), and the "Ligeti Project" box on Teldec, which includes the Ligeti CD Drasko suggested.  The CD of Ligeti piano works Wanderer suggested is also very good (and available as part of a different Ligeti box from Sony); or try the String Quartets, of which I have two excellent performances, one by the Artemis Quartet on Virgin, and the other on Naxos by a quartet whose name I don't remember at the moment.

For Carter and Tippett you can try the string quartets, which can be found on Naxos performed by the Pacifica Quartet and the Tippett Quartet--that would be, however, two CDs for each set of quartets, but at Naxos pricing you'd be paying no more than you would for a single disc on some other labels, so I don't think that would be stretching your guidelines too much.
