Well, and that's a nice price . . . at the Italian site . . . .

The Italian site with the 14 Euro shipping charge for us Yanks, don't forget!  So the price is not...so nice.

oof

I suppose you could hunt around there and find enough things to make the shipping charge less onerous...

I'm glad you pointed that out, Karl! I didn't click on Jens' link because normally they take you to Amazon USA (which I rarely use). Instead I looked at Amazon DE and nearly had a heart attack. They want 65 Euro  :o  I decided I would skip it despite Jens' endorsement. But now... :)

So, thank you, Karl, and thank you, Jens.

Very pleased that a friend has benefited from the adventure, Sarge!

Hey, order two, and send me one . . . .

Liszt's Annees de pelerinage; this set seems to be very good and Lortie is a fine lisztian interpreter :) Listened to the exceprts on amazon, beautifully played. ;D

I liked this hugely, more refined than the popular Berman, but for recent releases found Chamayou on Naïve to be even better. Stupidly good.

Ah, yes, but my linking, when it's not default-linking, is intelligent. I don't link to obscene or absurd prices. (Absurd being when the price is not reflecting the value of the product but, as in the US, DE, and FR cases, the convolutions of importing-twists or bad distribution.)

Apart from Italy, it can--naturally--also be had for a good price from the UK.

Thank you! But Karl and others may not be so thankful.   I just ordered what AmazonUK says is their only copy in stock.  (But "more on the way".)

It's still available at the price.  But availability is (I just checked back) given as "usually ships in 9-13 days".

There's really only one recording of the Années de pèlerinage that I like, love, adore.
Bloody brilliant... on a 1851 Erard. Not a period-instrument fetish... just amazing colors.

F. Liszt
Années de pèlerinage
Daniel Grimwood

A stunning recording that completely changed the way I had been thinking about and listening to Liszt.

Wow, on a 1851 Erard? How brilliant! :)
Thanks for the feedback, Jens; I never heard about this recording before, but looking at the reviews, it seems to be beautiful. Then, I may consider this one or Lortie's set.

And I apparently grabbed the last one in stock at Amazon IT. Sorry, Karl  ;)

Seconded! :) I have enjoyed this recording very much, while I definitely wasn't a Liszt fan before...I think Liszt's piano-wizardry is strongly colour-orientated. And since the colouring of the music is highly dependant on the instrument used, this might explain the success of this HIP-recording. Apart from the excellent musicianship of Grimwood, of course.

Opus106

Is it the good stuff? On paper, I suppose so, but what about the audio? Not looking for audiophile material, but I avoid mono-hiss-pop-and-crackle. From whom was this been licensed? Is it the same as this one? Have I asked enough questions?

Yes-ish.
Licensed from a so-so (= bad) sound quality 1959 Melodiya mono studio recording.
It is, and yet isn't the same as the one you link to: it's licensed off the original from which the Chant du Monde was faked (with added coughs and errant rest & fermata to pretend it's a live broadcast). Good, gruff stuff interpretatively , but not the answer to the 11th. The only other extant 11th with Mavrinsky is even earlier, live, from Moscow, and no improvement in sound, given the (unfaked) coughs. So ultimately I'd say: for that symphony look under Kondrashin or ... well, there are tons of good choices. It's been a lucky symphony on CD.

Thanks a bunch, Jens. I'll strike it off the list, then.

P.S.: Adding 'coughs' to fake an audience?! That's a new one for me. ;D
