Tony, there's some stuff you mayn't have heard yet here.

I'm still rooting about . . . I feel certain that the Va Sonata is on-lime somewhere, thanks to a kindly GMG soul . . . .

I love RVW 2 and love Bryden Thomsen's RVW.

Listened this morning to one of my favorite M2s -- Grammy nominated and voted record of the year by the German music critics, but virtually ignored ever since. Tony Duggan damned it with faint praise (very faint!) in his assessment of the Mahler discography.  Knowing his tastes, I understand why, for it's more subtle than spectacular.

This has been on my shelf some little time, Dave. High time I started listening to it!  The kick-start was watching the documentary O Thou Transcendent t'other night.

WOW WOW WOW.......   I can not believe that this composer is NEGLECTED! Shame on the recording industry for passing this man's symphonic output by. I have spent the whole week listening to this set and being swept away by the lush romanticism in these works.  I am currently on my last CD no.7 Symphonies 15 &16 and orchestral works.  Langgaard's symphonies are varied (he even uses the piano!!!) late romantic works which is a real treat to my ears.

Per this (for I do eat mine own cooking):

Дмитри Дмитриевич [ Dmitri Dmitriyevich (Shostakovich) ]
Violin Concerto № 2 in c# minor, Opus 129 (1967)
Gidon Kremer, vn
BSO
Ozawa

What do you think about Kremer's performance 2nd VC, Karl? I think I prefer Steinbacher (a newly acquired performance), but Kremer's was certainly good. Plus, Kremer has Ozawa. Steinbacher has Andris Nelsons who does a commendable job.

Such a beautiful, powerful work, absolutely brilliant!! ;D There are some moments in the 2nd movmement where the use of brass reminds me the ouverture of Der fliegende Holländer.....
