Hummel.

Cello Sonata in A major, opus 104.

This must be the best performance I ever heard of this beautiful sonata. It is so lovingly treated, that I sit in awe listening to it. apart from being great music, it needs great musicians to get the max out of this work, and they certainly are up to the task. Recommended!

Quarenta Horas.

Joyful and Spectacular Spanish Music from the 18th Century, Madrid.

Composers; Joseph de Torres, Antonio de Literes, Joseph de San Juan.

This box has been for me a astounding experience, and throws me every time into a turmoil of utter delight.  These group of dedicated people produced what is a centre point of excellence, which cannot be surpassed.  10 fine discs for 15 euro's is a super bargain, a save investment.

First listen to Chailly's Mahler's 5th. What a performance! The sonics and the orchestra are incredible (those horns!).
This must be my definitive 5th  ;)

You truly are the Mahler expert  :D
I bought Chailly's 4th and 5th + Solti's 5th and 6th in the last 2 months, all recommended by you.
A 4/4 is quite an impressive score  :o

I think it is now time for me to explore Mahler 2. What would you recommend?

Thanks again!
Nico

haha, thank you! My Mahler collection is rather small compared to that of people like Sarge though. It's still growing though! :)

Mahler 2... good choice! Well, Sir Simon Rattle's recordings of Mahler 2 are outstanding. One with the CBSO, and a later, more recent one with the BPO, both of EMI. I would very much recommend those, along with Bernstein's DG recording. :) My pleasure, Nico!

I would also add Chailly's recording in this list, it's superb.

I surely will include Chailly, since his 4th and 5th Mahler symphony recordings were revelations.
Bernsteins 2nd on DG is standing here on the shelf, so that will be the other one selected :)

Prokofiev: Symphony no.5, Op. 100
Prokofiev: Symphony no.6, Op. 111
Prokofiev: Symphony no.2, Op. 40

Set arrived today for a first listen, and it's definitely worth the price of admission. Only dove into nos.5, 2 and 6 and so far I'm convinced this will be a set to enjoy for many a year. Great sound and performances, only complaint from this end is the almost nonexistent horns, missing them during some key moments in the 5th and 6th.
The real revelation for me here is the 2nd, Op. 40, the opening Allegro ben articolato is at least a minute, in most cases almost two minutes faster than my other recordings, and I must say I've never been this jolted by it's energy and punch, it's a real firestorm of force. This no.2 will be getting a lot of playtime, and possibly move this opus to a higher stature.

The second quartet sounds surprisingly Dvořákian in the central movements - I like.

Is it the best? I don't know that anyone's qualified to make such a determination.

Do I like it the most? Hard to say...there are at least half a dozen recordings of the 3rd that I love. This seems likely to join them.

Let's just say that it's darned good and considerably better than his CSO 1st!
