I have not seen this recording during my searches of Mendelssohn's symphonies.  The only other contender that I came across is the Abbado set.

I decided rather hastily to buy the Dohnanyi set because of the  cantata included in that  set and no other reason.  Like I said an impulse purchase......... I just hope it pays off!

Are you kidding me? The Dohnanyi set is  amazingly good. In the combination of interpretative and orchestral quality, I think there's nothing to match it... not even Karajan (which, perhaps surprisingly, comes close... while Abbado is {edit: to my ears, especially comparing to Dohnanyi, Karajan, and CP Flor} strangely muted and, frankly, boring). Dohnanyi particularly pulls of the strange but extremely rewarding 2nd Symphony off like few, if any, others. If you don't find this the bee's knees, I'd be very surprised.

I get a lit of pleasure from the Abbado set. Exciting and uplifting is more like it. But we've had this argument before, so I'll leave it at that.

Well, they're superbly performed and surely it's not for technical deficiencies that I don't like the interpretations that much...
That's what different interpretations exist for. Although the music on its own is good enough to have listeners derive a lot of pleasure, excitement, and lift from it.
Do you have the Dohnanyi set, though? Or Karajan's recording of the 2nd? (I know it's not everyone's favorite... so it may not be as important to others as it is to me.)
For some reasons, you can really mess that symphony up, even if all the ingredients seem to be right. The Sawallisch recording of the 2nd, for example... you'd think ought to be very good (I'm very fond of Sawallisch, usually) -- and it just makes you wonder what is supposed to be special about the music, instead. Frieder Bernius manages, Dohnanyi does, Karajan does, and if I remember correctly Weller's account is very nice, too...

Do I have the Dohnanyi? Not yet, but I am interested by the generally positive comments (and I like all involved). I don't remember which other recordings I have heard (my library has one I've taken out a couple times, but I don't like it as much as what I have and it's been a while since I last listened to it - next time I'm there, I'll see if I can find it to at least tell you which it is). Interesting that you bring up the 2nd, because this is the symphony I listen to most. I wish it were performed more.

I haven't heard Dohnanyi, but otherwise agree with this.

Are Dohnanyi's First and Second available separately from a complete set of the symphonies?  I ask because I've long had a double CD of Symphonies 3-5 filled out by the Hebrides overture and I forget what else.

Third-party sellers are selling the "complete symphonies" box for cheaper than the twofer, though.

But symmetry says get the duo!  Thanks for the lead--I don't need to make an immediate decision,  I do see the set has all the fillers that are found on the double CD issues.

Might ask somebody who has the full box set if it includes sung texts and translations. Amazon reviewers say the old duo has 'em.

Oh, I know this series from other issues, and the answer is probably no.  (The Mahler set does not, but the Beethoven does have the text for the Ode to Joy.) And the Abbado set in DG's other series does not have the texts either.

Great choice, Gold Knight. It's hard to beat Boult in RVW.
