Ordered the following CD's from Amazon US in the wee hours of the morning today ...

mahler10th

This can be got as an MP3 download for 5 bucks.

From Abruckner.com:
QuoteHere is a real bargain for those of you who are willing to download mp3 files onto your computer. Amazon is offering Bruckner's Symphonies 0 and 3-9 with Gennadi Rozhdestvensky for just $5.00 (no shipping, of course). I don't know what happened to Symphonies 1 & 2 in this offer - and there are a few other anomolies - The B4 is the Mahler orchestration, the B7 may be conducted by Yonah Alexis and the B3 is his earlier 1972 recording, but for five bucks, who can complain!

I got it.

Masur is also very good conducting for Lorenz in Mahler's KTL and Wayfarer songs.

If only Gurn were sure enough of his convictions to take a definitive stand on this recording's merits:

IMO, this is one of the best efforts on period instruments. If you are one who has been hesitant for whatever reason to invest in a PI 9th, or conversely if you are a big fan of PI performances, this is a disk to have. Unusually enough, it was rec'd to me by a singer, one who is unusually critical of recorded singing efforts, and the result is that besides being wonderfully well-played, it also has just about the best choral work I've heard, in addition to really good soloists. Strongly recommended. :)

I bought it anyway. ;) 8)

Regardless of what Gurn said, it's a great recording, and definitely worth it.  :)

I wish it were as good a Ninth as I wanted it to be. Perhaps I just need a few more tries to 'get it'... but so far it sure hasn't clicked, between me and Flip's 9th.

Found these two Roge/Poulenc discs for cheap. I love Poulenc's solo piano music and have heard good things about these performances.

And I wish more native English speakers were as well-versed in hypotheticals and contrafactuals as well as you. ;)

I often find much to admire in Flip's discs (his SMP & DLVDE, especially) but must admit he has yet to make me swoon. Perhaps that requires more risk taking...? Regardless, Gurn's strong recommendation in this case is good enough for me to risk it at a discount. :)

Rogé's a fine choice. You might like this one, too:

Do I really need another Le Sacre du Printemps or Firebird? When it concerns Fischer, yes, yes I do! 8)

Edit: This recording makes my 40th performance of Le Sacre du Printemps on CD.

Ordered tonight from Arkiv--five CDs worth of Norrington conducting Mahler (1,2, 4, 5 and 9),
Having had some time for digestion, what do you think of Norrington's Mahler?

I was pleasantly surprised by what I heard of his M1 on Daniel's comparison thread. (Naturally it was rejected in the first round!) Thanks to Mog, I was able to hear the whole thing. I liked the Blumine included as the second movement with the scherzo following. Norrington's Ländler is terrific--made me get up and dance--and his final movement is just as infectiously energetic.

I may be having a hard time justifying $20 or $30 for Rattle or Tennstedt's complete cycles, but scarcely hesitated to click "buy" for Norrington's M1 alone. ;)

More Mahler, Dohnanyi/CO M5, after Sarge sang its praises.

You're probably right about this, Karl. This is something she doesn't need to know right away or maybe I'll never tell her at all. ;) :D
