I'm in the market for some Liszt lieder from the female side of life.  The four recordings I am considering are:

Angelika Kirchschlager/Hyperion
Elisabeth Kulman/Preiser
Diana Damrau/Virgin Classics
Ruth Ziesak/Berlin Classics

Your input is appreciated.

Damrau + Deutsch = Drama + Beauty (Can't speak to the others, sorry)

That's good enough for me.  It's in the mail as well as the Kirchschlager on Hyperion.

When Luke mentions a recording he likes, I should know my peril by now . . . .

Ah, yes ... the Jimi Hendrix of cellists!

It's seems Chandos are on to their third disc of pure Fasch! Anyone heard any of these? Did you like it? Or perhaps these aren't the ones to get?

Be kind to your fellow posters!!

I'm considering the Philippe Herreweghe's Bruckner symphony recordings:

I wished Herreweghe would record the 6th. That would be right up his alley I think.

One you didn't mention that I particularly enjoy is Barbara Bonney's disc with Antonio Pappano featuring the over-the-top cover shown below:

It also features Schumann's Dichterliebe.

A fine disc, IMO ... but then I'm a huge fan of Ms Bonney.

John, I haven't heard Herreweghe's recordings of Bruckner's symphonies, but if they are any close to as great as his recording of Bruckner's Mass in F minor, I say hit the purchase button at once!  :) 8)

Yeah, I would, Ray, but right now they're quite expensive. I'm going to look around the net though and see if I can them for good prices.

Hey, John, if you're a member of SymphonyShare, you can download a couple of live performances (5 & 8, I think), assuming the links are still alive.

Cool, thanks for this information. :)

I have his recording of Bruckner's 7, and I did not like it at all. Without listening again I can't say more, just remember my great disappointment. But since your taste often is quite different to mine you should get more information :)

Excellent, Ray. I saw this one and the Salonen Blu-ray of Janacek's The Makrapulos Affair at a CD store I frequent. They have a pretty large selection of classical Blu-rays. I'll probably swing by and pick them up at some point. I should of bought them yesterday, but I had a long conversation with another customer and I simply lost track of time. Before I had time to start to look, my Mom was waiting for me outside. :(

Thanks, Sadko. I'm probably not even going to get them. If anything, I'll get the recording of the 5th because it's the only available right now at a decent price.

Corrected. (Blu rays are recordings.)

I, too, have been acquiring some and considering more opera and symphony recordings in video format. Curiously, seeing the musician closeups while hearing, say, a Mahler symphony adds interest to my listening experience ... whereas I've yet to see an opera DVD that held my attention from start to finish. However, audio-only opera recordings also often fail to sustain my interest -- unlike the theatrical experience of live opera, which rarely fails to keep me entertained from start to finish.

Still I think opera AV recordings are a very convenient and cost-effective way to get a taste of opera and to familiarize ourselves with "new" works. I only wish there were good streaming sources for watching opera recordings via the web.  Some day, no doubt, but for now it seems the expected market is too small to make it worth Netflix or Amazon's while (although they offer an infinite supply of cheesy direct-to-video horror flicks and the like!).

It's almost impossible for me to listen to an opera without taking a break of some kind and the same goes for a film. I have never listened to an opera without a break. I'm sad to report that I do not have a superhuman attention span. :( I suppose this is why I like music that is rhythmically charged in some way, but I also love picking apart Impressionistic works because of their harmonic language. Getting back on topic, at least with a Blu-ray, I don't have to worry about not missing anything because I can simply pause it and take a break. You can take a break at a concert, sure, but the show goes on with or without you and you may miss something crucial.

Bruckner 7th might be my favorite (only 5 truly rivals), I own more copies of that than any other, and I find Herreweghe's to be brilliant, Solti and Chailly have long been my tops but Herreweghe get many listens.
