After a couple of weeks of other things going on, finally got around to taking the plunge with those boxes I was looking at...

Cover for the last one isn't right but the contents appear to match.

Very nice, the Janacek is fantastic, and the others look yummy, too.

Orfeo, but forgot to put the quotation in.
Do report about Ashkenazy & Maazel when you've got it - I need to get the some set of orchestral Scriabin, too.

Bach, Schumann, Prokofiev,
Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff,
Russian Piano School v.16
Passacaglia BWV 582 (transc. Zhukov), Waldesszenen et al.
Igor Zhukov
Melodiya / RCA

German link - UK link

As BWV 582, in any and all versions, is one of my great loves, I finally needed to have this... and how wonderful in every way Zhukov's performance of his own Passacaglia transcription is!

Well, I've been 'culling' Scriabin for years and finally settled on the Brilliant offering below - three CDs w/ just over 3 hrs of many of his orchestral works; have another disc of his piano concerto et al; BUT there are plenty of well reviewed recordings of these Scriabin works - good luck in your choice(s) - :)

Thanks!
The Muti is OOP (both the Brilliant and EMI issues). I'm quite content with Demidenko's Concerto.
This Jablonski & Ashkenazy box looks nice, though.

The Muti Scriabin set is the finest of the lot IMHO. I have yet to get that Rozhdestvensky recording, but I've definitely been considering it. Supposedly, it contains one of the best performances of the Piano Concerto on record.

Just bought:

And I just couldn't resist even though I said I wouldn't buy it:

This should keep me busy for awhile. I'm still going to Salonen's new Violin Concerto recording and then I guess I'll just have to see what else comes out that I want.

Quote from: Mirror Image on September 25, 2012, 08:29:41 AMPay no attention to that Santa Fe Listener character. He writes so many reviews that it makes me question whether he actually listened to the music.

I think he does listen to the music he reviews, the problem being that (as with professional music reviewers) he listens to so much stuff that he doesn't get to "live with" recordings for a while before reviewing them, instead issuing his immediate reaction as though it was a considered judgement. For myself, I only review things where I think I have a point to make that hasn't yet been raised (that's why I review a lot of stuff that's generally regarded as insignificant or a bit shoddy).

Quote from: Mirror Image on September 25, 2012, 11:13:24 AMThe problem is he comes across as a know-it-all, too good to be HIP (no pun intended), and overall an elitist bigot. There are better ways to get across your opinion other than personally attacking someone who doesn't agree with you.

Irony!

The text I bolded was to make an emphasis on one of the funniest statements I've read on this board for quite some time. You think Santa Fe Listener is a "professional critic"? Anyway, I don't like the guy and I think the best way to deal with him is not to deal with him. Like Dave Ross said, the guy is a pompous ass.

Do you have Arrau, Jeffrey? Rubinstein is my second favorite, quite close to Arrau, but behind him.

Yes--in fact, you were probably the one who pointed his recording out to me--as well as his Preludes, Impromptus and Etudes, and various miscellaneous works.  But I like Rubinstein's way better.

No, that's obviously not what I meant. To put it country simple: SFL suffers from a problem which is also suffered by professional music critics. Not that this should even make a difference, as there are plenty of critics (and other professional writers) whose chief job qualification is the discipline to turn out prose to a reasonable standard and at a timely rate, regardless of the content.

Are you sure you're a kid? You sound much too worldly wise for that!

Interesting choice. Such an underrated set which hardly ever gets mentioned. But I've always enjoyed it. :)
