Finally, got my hands Gibson's Sibelius set!

[asin]B000000A9D[/asin]

Bought in like new condition for $48. Not bad considering this set has been OOP for quite some time. This makes my 19th Sibelius symphony cycle. I'm lacking both Berglund's earlier EMI cycle (w/ Bournemouth), his Chamber Orchestra of Europe cycle, Saraste's cycle on Finlandia, and Abravanel's cycle (w/ the Utah Symphony Orch. which has been reissued).

Apropos the Hurwitzer, his review of Bakala's Janáček prompted a purchase. Arrived today:

"This release positively reeks of an idiomatic Janáček performance tradition[....]Bakala, who worked extensively with the composer himself, refuses to guild the lily. Endings that lack ritards (such as the opening fanfare) simply stop; joins between tempos in the second movement jar abruptly; the central climax of the third movement has the horns bearing down on their wild "whooping" figures like in no other performance..."

Strictly for the Lemminkäinen Suite. Already own the 2-CD set of tone poems on Chandos, but needed this performance.

And this one:

I'm officially done with Gibson's cycle of Sibelius now.

After reading a recent post made by Dave Ross in the Sibelius thread, I was quite surprised to find that I didn't own this recording. I've heard alot of positive/negative things about Mutter's take on Sibelius' Violin Concerto. It will be interesting to see what I make of it since so often that I end up enjoying quite controversial recordings.

:) :) :)
JPC is Shipping me one of these!
I thought it was an impossible long shot, since a dispute over the rights to the recording forced Piano Classics to discontinue the issue after just a few dozen copies had trickled out to retailers.

You will find it pretty much the way he describes it. There's more Janacek from Bakala (I have a 2-disc set that contains the above Mass and  Sinfonietta) and although everything is worthy of repeated hearings, the sound is nothing but modern. Devoted yanatchekians should definitely splurge.

Hurwitz likes it? Then I probably won't like it. ;) I'm still finding it hard to top MTT/LSO in both Glagolitic Mass and Sinfonietta, although Mackerras is no stranger to either works. The only thing that worries about this recording is the audio quality. Those old Suraphon recordings are so harsh.

Just placed an order with Presto on the following CD's ...

It might prove a waste of money, but for the price of a burger and fries I'll chance it! ;)

I bought this one the other night along with another Salonen's Lemminkäinen Suite. Got them both cheap as hell.

Can never hurt to have too many Shostakovich recordings...at least for me. :) Anyway, I heard some of this performance of Violin Concerto No. 1 and thoroughly enjoyed it. I never heard the Passacaglia movement taken this slowly, but I really liked it because it afforded me the opportunity to hear all of those beautiful instrumental voices intertwining and how that mournful violin solo part just kind of soars across on top. Incredibly beautiful. Didn't listen to any of Flor's Symphony No. 9 performance as I was so mesmerized by the VC.

I assume you mean the "sound is anything but modern" ....true, but it's decent for its vintage.

I know what you mean but my recent Supraphon purchases have been a pleasant surprise, including this one (recorded in 1950/1). Maybe they've finally finally figured out how to make a silk purse, etc.  ;D  Hurwitz gave it a 4 rating for sound. I think it's better than that, a 6 maybe. Rawness describes the performance (which suits Janáček) but doesn't, to my ears, describe the sound. It's generally clean mono with outstanding clarity. There are details revealed I've not heard in other recordings. But the sound isn't important. What is important (to me) is hearing the music played this way by someone who knew the composer. Hearing that Czech tradition.

Edit: My comments about the sound apply to the Sinfonietta. I haven't yet heard the Mass.

Thanks, Dave. Yeah, I've seen several of these Salonen Sibelius videos. There's even one up of Kullervo, which is a nice surprise, but I'm all about CDs and hearing the music through a good system, which is why I believe we all buy CDs. But YouTube is great for discovering music you haven't heard before and seeing some rare stuff that you, otherwise, would never be able to see.
