to be honest, I don't care for Debussy and impressionism in general. I find it boring and extremely unattractive.  That said, I am hoping this set converts me....so to speak.

The music you're generally drawn to (i. e. Shostakovich, Weinberg) requires a certain frame of mind and ears to appreciate. I can only hope that you're not expecting the same things from Debussy that you are from Shostakovich. They're two different ends of the musical spectrum for sure. If you're into harmony, then Debussy will hopefully prove a plethora of discoveries for you.

Mean no disrespect, but that is an obvious point.  One set of ears would make it impossible to like multiple types of music from different eras.  It would be impossible to listen and enjoy Corelli or Gluck expecting it to sound like Shostakovich,Prokofiev, or Weinberg

Not only Martinon's Debussy, Ashkenazy's recording of the Glazunov/Prokofiev works is beautiful too.

I was merely using your own prerogatives as a means to make a point, but whether it's an obvious statement or not doesn't mean that it isn't true. Debussy's music for me is an endless stream of lyrical beauty and depth. Listen to the subtle nature of his music and the way he uses these gorgeous harmonic colors that give his music more dimension. But it could very well be you just don't have the ears for the music and that's perfectly fine with me. I was attuned to his sound-world almost immediately.

Peer pressure is just awful  ;D That thing has been on my wish list for well over a year, too. I've listened to the Cinderella from Spotify, though. Perhaps the next time I buy music...

If your interest is in Cinderella, I think Rozhdestvensky has more bite and character than Ashkenazy.   On Melodiya 1000906 (don't bother with other transfers).

I can agree with this. The whole Rozhdestvensky Prokofiev ballet series is worth acquiring. I like Michail Jurowski's recording on CPO a lot as well.

Thanks!
They're both in Spotify, so I'll probably compare them there before buying. Sampling now the Rozhdestvensky, this does sound good very good indeed.

The ballet is so good, you need to have one of them. I can vouch for the Ashkenazy, but do not know the Rozhdestvensky, though I imagine it is excellent based on other things he's done. Either way, win win for you!

Can't argue with you, Neil. Pletnev's arrangement for piano duet (or piano four hands, don't remember now which it is) is superb, too.

I have heard that Svetlanov Borodin is fierce.  I think it will be my introduction to those symphonies, when I can set aside the time and money.

Oh, I'm sorry I posted it in the wrong thread! :-[ I've already got Bernstein's recording, I was listening to it.

One of my very favorite Naxos discs. Which, I suppose, is saying quite a bit.
